Javier Peláez (Mexico City, 1976) is one of the most recognized contemporary painters of his generation. His work can be understood as an intelligent dialogue between hyper-realism and conceptual art, with a pop overtone. One of he’s recent series–“Objetos sagrados” (“Sacred Objects”)–portrays covered iconic sculptures that represent diverse belief-systems in contemporary societies. Thess veiled ‘sculptures’ appear completely covered up with metallic foil, though their contours remain perfectly recognizable (i.e. seating Buddah, or Mickey Mousse). What is that which Peláez intends to ‘regain’ by mysteriously un-presenting these highly symbolic cultural artifacts? How does our relation to this wrapped-painted objects thrives to re-signify and reassert itself in his images? Some of the interrogations this talented painter sets upon us.

The sculpture, Lovers, is a captivating piece inspired by the iconic artworks The Great Wave, by 19th century Japanese artist Hokusai and The Kiss, by Art Nouveau artist Gustav Klimt. The sculpture represents the transformative and unpredictable power of art and love; the serene blissful expression of the figures gives way to an interlocking, almost desperate embrace. The figures dissolve into each other, flowing together into one symbolic wave. As the sea is often a metaphor for Life, the sculpture depicts the loving couple’s blissful faces as the pinnacle of the wave. The power and peace embodied in this work make it a sensational and dynamic sculpture that is sure to enhance any space.
Ana Tzarev’s body of work reflects her remarkable depth of knowledge regarding the cultural history of lands as diverse as Africa, Japan, Hawaii, and Thailand among others. She has exhibited worldwide and was one of the international artists selected to design a portion of the Hanoi Ceramic Mural, the world’s largest ceramic mural. The paintings on which her Wall design was based were recently featured in a solo exhibition in October, 2010 at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum as part of the city’s Millennium celebration.
