INTERVIEW | SAN FRANCISCO

JUNIOR COUNCIL WEST FOUNDING MEMBERS KELLY HUANG AND RIMMA BOSHERNITSAN DISCUSS THE GROUP'S PLANS

This summer Artadia launched the Junior Council WEST, a member group for young professionals in the Bay Area who are passionate about contemporary art and who are looking to connect with their peers, to exchange ideas, and to learn about emerging trends in the Bay Area and beyond. The group includes a wide range of professions and is unique in its national connectivity through the Artadia network and its intimate size, which allows for genuine contacts and conversations.

The invitation-only group has quickly gained momentum thanks to a fabulous launch party at Kadist SF this summer and, more importantly, thanks to its dedicated group of Founding Members: Jana Blankenship, Rimma Boshernitsan, Sabrina Buell, Joelle Connolly, Vanessa Critchell, Chris Fitzpatrick, Matthew Goudeau, Kelly Huang, Cynthia Kagay, Nathan Larramendy, Alex Matson, Celia Peachey, and Eli Ridgway.

Artadia spoke with two of the Founding Members Kelly Huang and Rimma Boshernitsan to hear more about the group and their plans—both for the near term and the more distant future.

If you are interested in joining the Junior Council WEST please write to JuniorCouncilWEST@artadia.org and visit our website to learn more.

What kind of programs are you planning for the inaugural 2011–12 season?

Kelly: The Junior Council WEST Founding Members—who all have connections to a wide variety of artists, collectors, and institutions in the Bay Area—have come up with an engaging and fun program for our first year: We look forward to giving our members access to some of the most impressive collections of contemporary art in the Bay Area and combining those visits with time to socialize and discuss what we have seen. To further support and cultivate relationships within the Artadia network, the Junior Council WEST plans to host studio visits with Artadia Awardees in the Bay Area followed by informal drinks and dinner. Last but not least, our members will be privy to a curator-led walkthrough of two upcoming exhibitions at the CCA Wattis Institute this winter.

Artadia originally launched the Junior Council in 2010 in New York. What is the Junior Council WEST’s relationship to the New York group?

Rimma: Many of our members regularly travel between San Francisco and New York; two of our Founding Members are actually the West Coast directors for their New York-based galleries (Vanessa Critchell for Luhring Augustine and Sabrina Buell for Matthew Marks). Over time we look forward to combining our networks and perhaps hosting an event together, maybe somewhere in between the East and West Coasts!

Where and how did the idea of founding the Junior Council WEST come about?

Kelly: I first learned about Artadia while working at The Renaissance Society in Chicago. Hamza Walker was on the jury for the Atlanta Awards, and he was the one who introduced me to the organization. He told me about the history of Artadia and how much ongoing support they provide their awardees. Around the same time my friend Theaster Gates won an Artadia Award in Chicago. I saw how much it impacted him and his career, and I knew I wanted to get involved. I reached out to Artadia’s Executive Director, Lila Kanner, and she connected me with Rimma, who had also expressed interest. It was the perfect match: We both felt that San Francisco was in need of a young professionals group that was centered around contemporary art—a community of active and engaged young professionals. And we both agreed that Artadia, with its mission to provide a network of support and to foster meaningful dialogue, was the perfect organization to work with to build that community.

Artadia was started in San Francisco by art collector Christopher Vroom when he was around the same age as the members of the Junior Council WEST today. What does this say about the role that San Francisco can play in an arts community, and more specifically about the ability of young people to influence it?

Kelly: I think that young professionals have the drive to really engage and shape an arts community. With Artadia’s support and with the ambition of our members, I feel that the Junior Council WEST can help shape the culture around contemporary art in the Bay Area by giving support to young artists in the community.

Rimma: There is also the possibility that we will be able to designate one winner as a Junior Council WEST-sponsored awardee in the next Bay Area Awards cycle, which is coming up next fall 2012. We are really hoping to be involved and make an impact on both the artists and the art world in the Bay Area.

So far, how has joining the Junior Council WEST impacted your interaction with the contemporary art world?

Rimma: Although the art world in the Bay Area is small, we do not all know each other or see each other often enough. Junior Council WEST has given me a chance to meet new people whom I know will become friends and collaborators. I am looking forward to a great year of programming that will allow me to meet artists and collectors whom I have great respect for. Our members can look forward to the same.

How do you envision the Junior Council WEST in two years?

Kelly: We plan on growing the Junior Council WEST to no more than 50 to 60 members over the next two years. We want the group to remain small and personable. And we want the membership to be diverse—not only arts professionals, but also young collectors and those who have a general interest in contemporary art. The Founding Members are looking forward to dreaming up new unique opportunities in the coming years to engage in all that San Francisco’s contemporary art community has to offer.

The interview was conducted by Jordan Hart, Artadia's summer intern.

About Artadia: The Fund for Art and Dialogue

Artadia’s mission is to encourage innovative practice and meaningful dialogue across the United States by providing visual artists in specific communities with unrestricted awards and a national network of support. Artadia was founded as The ArtCouncil in 1997 by investment banker and art collector Christopher E. Vroom. The first awards were given in San Francisco, where Vroom was living at the time. Chicago was added as a program city in 2001. In 2003, Artadia added Houston to its roster, Boston in 2007, and Atlanta in 2009. Once Artadia commits to a community, it maintains a commitment to supporting artists in the area, and also co-sponsors public programs with a local institution. Started as an individual’s vision, Artadia’s base of support now includes private foundations, a national Board of Directors, a National Council, a Junior Council, and members who are active in supporting the core of creative culture: the individual artist.

Artadia Awards are determined through a rigorous jury process that employs nationally prominent curators, artists, and critics. Artadia partners with local foundations and individuals in the host cities to raise funds that go directly to artists in that community. Artadia matches those contributions by providing the funds that administer the program. Once an artist receives an Artadia Award, he or she becomes part of a national network of lifetime support.

Artadia's New York Artist Residency program brings Artadia Awardees from each of its program cities to New York for a three-month residency at the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP) in Brooklyn. This groundbreaking addition to Artadia’s commitment to individual artists is the first of its kind in New York City for US-based visual artists and is supported by the National Endowment for Arts. Last year Artadia launched an Exhibitions Exchange program, exhibiting awardees from one partner city in another, offering awardees crucial exposure outside of their local communities.

Artadia also presents events in New York and Miami, which are intended to not only demonstrate the tremendous creativity in partner communities, but also to facilitate exchange and dialogue nationwide.
