Betty Press features selected photographs from her new book I Am Because We Are: African Wisdom in Image and Proverb capturing East and West Africa through photography since 1987. Her timeless and engaging black and white photographs are paired with historic African proverbs that speak of identity, character, wisdom, and the concept of Ubuntu, the African philosophy of living harmoniously in community. The proverbs have been collected by Annetta Miller, an American born in Tanzania who has worked and lived in East Africa for the majority of her life. Betty Press's photography has been honored and exhibited nationally at the Southeast Museum of Photography in Daytona Beach, Florida, the Baldwin Photographic Gallery, Middle Tennessee Sate University in Murfreesboro, the Art League in Daytona Beach, Florida, Lycoming College in Williamsport Pennsylvania, the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in Denver Colorado, in addition to many others. Preludes features sculpture busts and figures in marble, terra cotta and bronze, alluding to the quiet nuances that occur in dance before the movement begins. Drawn to the quarries of Carrara in the Apuane Mountains on the coast of Italy from a young age, McArdle creates figures structurally influenced by the Classic European Master Sculptures infused with the spirit and soul of tribal art. McArdle's commissions for public, educational, and religious institutions include monumental works for Spring Hill College, Mobile, AL; Marian House, Baltimore, MD; The Holton-Arms School, Bethesda, MD; St. Bede, Williamsburg, VA; Holy Trinity Church, Washington, DC; Holy Redeemer College, Washington, DC; as well as many private commissions across the United States, Italy, Belgium, Germany and Japan. For more information on Claire McArdle please visit her website.
