U.K. photographer to visit Dublin for exhibition’s U.S. debut

Shifting Perspectives – a poignant look at Down syndrome

on view Sept. 27 through Nov. 4, 2011 at Dublin Arts Council

DUBLIN, Ohio (Sept. 7, 2011) – Photographs can evoke emotional responses that transcend human speech and the written word. Such is the impact of the images of Shifting Perspectives, a poignant photography exhibition that provides insight into the joy and wonder of what it is to be human – and living with Down syndrome. A selection of photographs, taken over a nine-year period by photographers in the United Kingdom, depicts the everyday interactions of people of all ages who are living with Down syndrome. The images challenge conventional attitudes and are the catalyst for renewed perceptions of identity and individuality, encouraging a sensitive exploration of society’s norms and values.

U.K. photographer and Shifting Perspectives curator Richard Bailey will join local photographers Marcella Hackbardt and Abdi Roble in a discussion of the exhibition and the larger societal issues it addresses. The conversation will be moderated by Ann Bremner of Ohio State University’s Wexner Center for the Arts, on Sept. 27 at 5:30 p.m. at Dublin Arts Council, 7125 Riverside Dr., in Dublin. A reception for the artists follows from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The exhibition remains on view through Nov. 4.

The exhibition includes images from seven photographers and will make its U.S. debut in Dublin. The exhibition originated in the U.K., and has traveled to Turkey, the People’s Republic of China, Colombia, South America and Canada. A local photography exhibition will be developed featuring artwork created through a series of workshops to be held at Dublin Arts Council during October.

The exhibition and programs will raise awareness of Dublin, Ohio-based DownSyndrome Achieves and Down Syndrome Association of Central Ohio, who are collaborating with DAC in presenting the exhibition and related projects. October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month in the United States.

The exhibition is supported in part by GlaxoSmithKline, the Dublin Foundation, a Franklin County Neighborhood Arts Grant from Greater Columbus Arts Council and sustaining support from City of Dublin and Ohio Arts Council. Shifting Perspectives will be on view in the Dublin Arts Council gallery, 7125 Riverside Dr., Dublin, Ohio. Hours are Tuesday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.; Wednesday through Friday, 10 a.m.– 5p.m.; and Sat., 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The exhibition and reception are free of charge and all are welcome. Additional information: 614/889-7444; www.dublinarts.org.

Sarah Gordy after Vermeer, by Richard Bailey
(note: low resolution image)

Sarah is an actress who has played characters in television, radio and stage plays. Her versatility and grace lend themselves perfectly to this emulation of Vermeer’s elegant studies. Her successes illustrate that people living with Down syndrome are much more than an outdated stereotype.

Please contact Janet Cooper, cooper@dublinarts.org, 614-889-7444 for a high-resolution version of this, and additional images.
