EAST POP WEST Red Gallery presents a selection of the best East London
art and design collectives & directives. EAST POP WEST is a
celebration of contemporary creative collaborations, during a three-
day event at the recently vacated 20,000 sq ft former Innocent
Smoothies headquarters, which provides a rare chance for West London
to engage directly with East London’s artists and designers – to make
an investment and be part of the first EAST POP venture.
This event looks to bring some of the best from the most eclectic art
scene around to the people of West London, to inspire, and demonstrate
just why so much hype has been built up about one area.
A wide range of works including painting, sculpture, graphic art &
illustration will be on sale and the event will include site-specific
installations, films, live performances, food & drink and creative
activities in the children’s art area.
Already with plans to take EAST POP WEST all over the world including
to Berlin, Edinburgh Festival, Poland and Prague, West London is the
first destination that will get to discover the vision.
Shoreditch has a rich cultural heritage and over the last three
decades it’s become a hub for the arts, in particular the burgeoning
street art scene. During the 1960s slum clearances left Shoreditch
riddled with derelict buildings. Artists in the 80’s and 90’s with an
indomitable pioneering spirit turned warehouses into studios, clubs
and galleries, transforming the district into the thriving,
influential creative community it is today.
In recent years the walls of East London have become a continuously
evolving self-curated gallery of commercially successful street
artists including Banksy, Roa and Shepard Fairey. Meanwhile, behind
these walls younger rawer talent has been forming collectives to
produce exhibitions, live art events, products and publications. The
result is a rich and exciting union of hand -crafted media and digital
technologies.
EAST POP WEST – THE ARTISTS
Artswipe
Artswipe includes Ben Eine ,Pure Evil, Dr. D, Cartrain, JBoy, Ben
Allen, Agent Provocateur, Jo Peel, Tinsel Edwards and Twinkle
Troughton. The artists fall into no particular category but all the
work is figurative, accessible, has something relevant to say and
perhaps most importantly, has a sense of humour. The prints are all
exclusive to Artswipe and are sold online and at art fairs and pop up
exhibitions.
Decima
Decima Gallery is a London-based arts projects organisation with a
reputation for irreverent projects, according to a 2008 article in The
London Paper:
“ART for sex, gay claims for Jesus, pantomime cows – all standard fare
for infamous London gallery Decima. The space, formerly in a
Bermondsey back street, built up a rep in the late 90s for its
headline-grabbing stunts. There was the Fuck Art and Pimp exhibition,
where Angela Marshall offered her drawings for blow jobs (later
unveiled as a spoof), the show Was Jesus a Homosexual?, and the time
Decima’s joint curators Alex Chappel and David West gratecrashed the
Tate dressed as a pantomime cow to “make people think”—Jessica
Holland, The London Paper.
Don’t Tell Stories
Led by author and lecturer Rachel Newsome, Don’t Tell Stories are
imaginative writing workshops that have appeared at festivals such as
Latitude and Bestival, for anyone who keeps diaries, writes blogs or
who simply wants to explore creative expression through words.
The Found Art Collective
The Found Art Collective compromise of artists including Alistair
Eland, Antonia Wilson, Georgina Richardson, Gerald Curtis, Helga
Fannon, Kate Jeram, and Mia Gulati.
Gerald Curtis uses performance, poetry, photography and material
process or a combination of the aforementioned media to propose
strategies and arguments which explore anomalies between communication
and space.
Hackey Wicked
Hackney WickED adjust outdoor installations to work within an indoor
arena and re-presenting studio work in a gallery environment to
reflect the mecca of artists and the indoor / outdoor spaces within
Hackney Wick. The collective includes Jonas Ransson and Christina
Mitrentse who created the 17 metre wall mural - ‘Emblem – Public
Mural’ in 2011 as part of the Hackney WickEd Art Festival.
Hato Press
Hato Press are a speciality printing and publishing house based in
London who focus on both screen-printing and the Risograph printing
processes (using soy based inks). Hato is an ever growing family for
other creatives. It is a support network established by Ken Kirton,
Jackson Lam and Louise Naunton Morgan to offer affordable means of
production to others so they may share their thoughts and dreams. At
Hato Press we believe in the innate pleasure of making things and
encourage others to join us. We also like trees and that’s why we only
stock recycle paper in house.
Keelertornero
Keelertornero make images which belong to an ever expanding epic soap
opera: 'Ghostjumps and Wormholes' which charts the unlikely trajectory
of a multitude of real and imaginary characters - human or otherwise.
Lovingly mopping up the cultural chaff from the sofa crack of our
brains, Chin Keeler and Emma Tornero work collaboratively, suspending
preconceived ideas in an animated dialogue of polar styles. They
create images in which the impossible emerges as something perfectly
natural, where characters play parts in an all-encompassing illusory
world – a place of dreams, hallucinations and unkempt fantasy,
inhabited by strange beings, beasts and insects living out their lives
just beyond our peripheral vision.
Le Gun
Le Gun magazine was founded in London in 2004 by a group of MA
graduates from the Communication Art and Design course at the Royal
College of Art. Distributed world-wide, LE GUN is an independent
narrative illustration magazine published bi-annually. This
publication provides a common ground for both emerging and established
artists, illustrators, writers and poets. The magazine has a
completely open submissions policy and accepts work from around the
world.
Material
Material gallery and bookshop began life in 2007.Created to represent
the work of designers and artists from a myriad of visual disciplines,
Material promotes limited edition prints and beautifully conceived
products. Due to the nature of print, much of the work is affordable
and, in turn, accessible to a wider demographic, stripping away any
false pretences that may have once been associated with the gallery
concept. With a desire to share ideas and provide a source of
discussion and inspiration by way of carefully selected complimentary
publications, we also pride ourselves on being one of a growing number
of establishments who, in light of the burgeoning digital age,
champion the importance of the book in its printed form for fear of
its inherent demise.
Metric collective
Metric collective is a collective of thinkers and doers, designers and
makers who use co-creativity to engage and empower. We promote
creative talent, support craft and provide education for the community.
Mrs. Jones
Fee Doran aka Mrs. Jones is one of Britain’s most colourful, eclectic
and creative individuals. Famed for her pop star creations which
includes Kylie’s ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’ White Hooded Catsuit
and Goldfrapp’s ‘Pony’ tails, Fee has worked with everyone from Giles
Deacon to Madonna, Scissor Sisters, The Killers, Oxfam and Fred Perry.
Over years specialising in reuse and transformation of garments, the
Mrs Jones label was born. Mrs Jones’ ability to transform any garment,
product or space in to something new and highly desirable has been
used in collaborations with brands, artists, stylists and designers
around the world.
New Found Original
New Found Original is a project by Graphic Designers Jo Murray &
Dominic Bell. They sell a carefully selected collection of graphic
products – designed, commissioned or found by us, sold at
newfoundoriginal.com. The products are chosen for the quality of
design, whether it’s a beautiful vintage item with bold, colourful
typography, or an exciting collaboration with an up and coming
designer or artist.
Pure Evil
To understand a bit about Pure Evil it is illuminating to know that he
is a descendant of Sir Thomas More, the Lord Chancellor who was
beheaded by King Henry VIII. It is only therefore natural that Pure
Evil should explore the darker side of the wreckage of Utopian dreams
and the myth of the Apocalypse, a belief in the life-changing event
that brings history with all its conflicts to an end.
Rart
Rart are an aware collective of emerging and established artists,
writers, flutists and designers based in east London and way beyond,
who share an aim to push new progressive sustainable Artistic
inventions and empower people through the medium of Art.
Co founders of the two fractions making up RART are Leanne Elliott and
Ita Maude Wooller, both practicing artists. Now they come together
with the help of many other creative professionals and artists to
further their shared belief in ART as a crucial medium of
communication. They celebrate drawing, sculpting and making
installations as well as things producing hand-made paper.
The Dark Times
Paul Sakoilsky is an artist, writer, curator and editor of ‘The Dark
Times’. With grounding in philosophy, he produces works across
several media, with the problem/practice of painting being a dominant
factor. He is perhaps best known for ‘The Dark Times’ project, a
psycho-political endeavour, works and installations from which have
been exhibited, published and collected world-wide and the ongoing
‘Kunst Clown’ performance series.
He is currently working on a series of large-scale paintings,
performances, future curation projects, and the forthcoming ‘The Dark
Times: newspaper+2’ publication.
The Department of Memory
'The Department of Memory' is a new collective of photographers whose
images feature found source material such as newspaper clippings,
magazines, old photographs and advertising posters, within the urban
environment. These locations are often disused, forgotten or about to
be demolished. The photographs record various ephemera, which
otherwise would remain unseen. There is the everyday here, but also a
timeless element created in the mix of memorabilia.
