NEW! WORKSHOP/CLASS: MAKING FLUXUS ACTIONS! ~ Tuesdays, 7-9 pm

Erik and Jill in Erik Hokanson's performance at Jajo Gallery, Newark
This is a new series being presented by the Directors of the Grace Exhibition Space and visiting artists, to attempt to answer that eternal question,

"What is FLUXUS Performance Art and How Can I Make It?"
Please bring an object with you

FLUXUS:

Fluxus encourages a "do-it-yourself" aesthetic, and values simplicity over complexity. Like Dada before it, Fluxus includes a strong current of anti-commercialism and an anti-art sensibility, disparaging the conventional market-driven art world in favor of an artist-centered creative practice. - paraphrased from Wikipedia

Jill McDermid-Hokanson and Erik Hokanson, directors of Grace Exhibition Space, participate in international performance-art festivals as artists and curators throughout Europe, Asia, Central and South America and will be conducting the class, with help from their friends

Founded in 2010, O U I Performance aims to create a physical and conceptual space for new live work in the city through the curation of regular performance events. O U I Performance commissions new work by local, national and international artists, committed to developing live performance practice on a local level that is represented nationally and internationally. Responding to a lack of sustainable infrastructure for contemporary time-based practice, O U I Performance supports non-commercial, experimental arts practice. Fostering a culture of criticality and discourse. >From October 2011 to June 2012, O U I Performance are presenting the programme Action Art Now including work by over 25 national and international action artists. www.ouiperformance.org.uk

Victoria Gray:

Victoria Gray makes performances that are sculptures and sculptures that are performances. Using minimal materials, primarily the body, her work explores the politics of movement and ways in which sociocultural factors inscribe and exert control over the body. Through performance actions, her work considers how the body might be antagonistic and resistant to dominant techniques of corporeal inscription, silencing and subordination. Victoria has shown work nationally and internationally, including solo performances at: ]Performance S p a c e[ (London), ArtEvict (London), Sideshow 2010, British Art Show 7 (Nottingham), Elevator Gallery (London) and Chisenhale Studios (London). Victoria has developed work on international residencies including Performing Arts Forum (France) and Es.Terni Festival (Italy).

He has shown work in the UK and Europe including Plymouth Arts Center, PSL Project Space Leeds, The Tramway (Glasgow), Spill Festival (London), ]Performance S p a c e[ (London) and Live Art Falmouth (Cornwall). His work explores arrangement and organisation, experimental writing practices and the relationship between text and image. Using sculptural arrangements of domestic objects and paper-based materials as language-based experiments often manifesting as action art, poetics and installation.

HECTOR CANONGE

My work integrates various means of communication and artistic production using virtual spaces, physical environments, and new technologies to establish connections between human (inter)actions, social networks, and technological adaptability. Based on notions of geographies, identity, gender roles, image appropriation, and the politics of migration, I explore contemporary issues affecting diverse communities in New York City. Over the years, I’ve developed new models of expression to mediate new projects and concepts. In analog form, I present tangible visual experiments where audiences manipulate and review the object(s) at will. In digital format, and whether I’m working for the Web, CD/DVD-Rom technology, and/or interactive installations, audience participation is important. From print to video, from Web based environments to multimedia installations, and from written to performance art narratives, I work with issues related to constructions of Self, social (re)presentations, and (re)constructions of public spheres incorporating historical, literary, and theoretical references. I see technology as the means and not the end of what I conceptualize, develop, and present.

ABOUT GRACE EXHIBITION SPACE IN BROOKLYN, NYC

Grace Exhibition Space, since 2006, is the only gallery in New York City devoted exclusively to Performance Art. We exhibit performance artists from around the world, whether emerging, mid career or established.

Being a Brooklyn loft, our events are presented on the floor, not on a stage, dissolving the boundary between artist and viewer. This is how performance art is meant to be experienced, and our mission is the glorification of performance art.

“Grace Exhibition Space is the sole gallery in this city that shows specifically, in its most intentionally narrow definition, Performance Art.” Patricia Milder, The Brooklyn Rail (May, 2011)

“Through such intimate encounters between performance groups and their guests, they could follow in the spirit of Yoko Ono’s Chamber Street loft or the Surrealist soirees of Paris” - Warren Fry, The Brooklyn Rail (August, 2007)
