Shifting Climates in the Desert Southwest
“Shifting Climates in the Desert Southwest—winners
& losers in a hotter, drier world” is the topic of the September 28
guest lecture by Dr. Cameron Barrows at the San Bernardino County Museum in
Redlands. The lecture, which starts at 7:30 p.m., is free to the public.
How will chuckwallas, fringe-toed lizards and other
desert creatures adjust to climate change? What about desert flora such as
Joshua trees? Using current observations, Cameron Barrows will explain modeling
efforts that show how a warmer and drier environment can shift those
distributions and explain how habitat fragmentation could exacerbate effects on
our icons of desert survival.
Camera Barrows is an Assistant Research Ecologist with the Center
for Conservation Biology at the University
of California, Riverside. He coordinates the Desert Studies
Initiative and was honored with the 2008 George Miksch Sutton Award by the
Southwestern Association of Naturalists.
