Expanding Our Historic Commitment to Conservation and Sustainable Development

MacArthur, a supporter of conservation efforts around the world for more than 25 years, is making a $176-million, ten-year commitment to conservation and sustainable development and unveiling a new, broader strategy that builds on the Foundation's historic focus on preserving biodiversity. "MacArthur will continue and expand its historic commitment to conservation and sustainable development," said Foundation President Robert Gallucci. "Looking ahead, we will broaden our focus to include areas where agriculture and extraction of resources threaten biodiversity, and we will invest in policy research and analysis to help societies respond effectively." The new strategy expands MacArthur's effort into production areas, where people and conflicts threaten biodiversity; to coastal marine systems and watersheds; and to policy research and further consideration of global issues, such as climate change.

Law and Neuroscience Research Network Expands

MacArthur has awarded $4.85 million to Vanderbilt University to administer the newly established MacArthur Research Network on Law and Neuroscience. The Network will examine the implications of modern neuroscience on criminal law and efforts to make neuroscience accessible and beneficial to America's courtrooms. Specifically, the group will look at the role neuroscience plays in legal assessments of mental states, capacity, and admission of evidence. The Network, led by Vanderbilt Professor Owen Jones, one of the nation's few professors of both law and biology, follows an initial phase of exploratory research under the direction of Michael Gazzaniga at the University of California at Santa Barbara.

Encyclopedia of Life Redesigned and Expanded

The Encyclopedia of Life (EOL), which offers information on nearly 700,000 species, has launched a redesigned and expanded website. The site seeks to increase awareness and understanding of living nature by gathering, generating, and sharing knowledge in an open, freely accessible, and trusted digital resource. EOL is supported by a community of over 700 curators responsible for reviewing and approving content, and by staff at contributing institutions around the world. The new version was developed in response to requests from the general public, citizen scientists, educators, and professional biologists around the world for a site that was more engaging, accessible, and personal. It now offers interfaces in English, Arabic, and Spanish. MacArthur is a founding supporter of EOL.
