On Saturday, Chali-Rosso Art Gallery from Vancouver, Canada which was participating for the first time at Shanghai Art Fair reported strong sales with last minute collectors vying to purchase collections of European Impressionists and Surrealist masters.
"During the four days of the fair nothing happened at our booth and suddenly for the last two days we had collectors buying everything we had" said Gregory Egedi who was present at the booth with gallery owner Thomas Strem.
"We were wondering what kind of impact we will have on the Chinese art market - suddenly on Saturday,, literally within 10 minutes, we had two Miro's and two Dali's sold," added Egedi who also said that a collector from Beverly Hills invited the gallery to exhibit their pieces at a private space in Shanghai.
Hundreds of red dots were adorning the walls from galleries of the French Pavilion such as Philippe's Collection which sold sculptures of French artist VAL; dozen of red dots were in place at Boun Fine Art Space with works sold by Boun, an artist from Laos who was present signing endless autographs
Other galleries that reported sales were Kinetic Creative that sold several paintings and calligraphy art from Chinese artist Tiexie Oi; LGM Art International sold paintings of Cesar Bertol, Hernan Miranda and Dario Ortiz; Curator's Voice Art Projects reported strong interest in works by Magaly Barnola Otaola, and Andres Michelena; Elite Fine Art Galleries reported strong sales from works by Carolina Rojas, Anica Schpilberg and from Spanish photographer Ana Sanz Llorens. Rimonin Art Gallery reported 4 sold works by Beatriz Gerenstein; Bandi Trazos Gallery also reported sales by works Joaquin Restrepo, Sculptor Alicia Meza, and Carlos Tirado.
Bandi-Trazos Galery's Curator Won Youngju was very pleased about sales. Director of Shanghai Hwas' Gallery, Emma Qian was also very pleased to report more than a dozen paintings sold by artist Wang Xiangming.
Longmen Art Projects sold several pieces of Chinese artist and poet Walasse Ting (1928-2010); The Found Museum presented and sold an extraordinary collection of works by Chinese artists Zhang Guolong and QU Qianmei. Other galleries that reported strong sales were Galerie Artdome Berlin which sold paintings by Christine Kunkler and Manuel Lunardi; Original Song Gallery sold works by Chinese artist, He Xi; King Space Gallery sold several pieces by Chinese artist Huang Cheng Yuan, Samuel Freeman gallery reported sales by Blue McRight, Luy Ken Art reported sales from works by Kalin Luy Ken; Gallery Nancy's reported sales by Mr. Fish.
CFM Gallery owner Neil Zukerman had said that coming to Shanghai with paintings by Leonor Fini, Anne Bachelier or Lisa Lichtenfels was not a good idea since those works are catered to another crowd and specific clientele not present at the fair.
Overall, the Shanghai Art Fair, sponsored by the Chinese government, successfully completed their 15th edition reassuring the global art market that China is rising, expanding and ranking number one in art sales.
