Campaign Spotlight: Barbara Nessim
Art Public and Private: From sketchbook to the walls of NYC buildings and hotels

There aren’t many illustrators who can boast successful careers spanning five decades, and fewer still who have made the transition from fashion designer, illustrator, to digital pioneer, educator and administrator, full circle to fine artist. Barbara Nessim is all those things and to her many friends, colleagues, and collaborators, she is much more: a generous mentor, patron of the arts, a woman with a keen interest in her own history and the best of the culture that she so often has been at the vanguard of with influence and impact.

She put herself through college at Pratt Institute as a freelance illustrator in the Garment Center. Inspired by the example of her mother, a clothing designer, Barbara had no doubt that she could make a career for herself, a gutsy attitude for the time. Her unique illustrations quickly drew attention and freelance clients. In the early 1970s she was asked to create a shoe line by the president of Carber, who had seen some shoe sketches she created as a magazine cover. She designed clothes and textiles as well before concentrating on painting and drawing.

Using the sketchbooks she has meticulously kept for decades (she is currently worked on number 93), adding fluid line drawings every day, drawings that she does not edit, but simply creates as the basis for all her art, she has produced thousands of pieces.

Nessim’s art is honest, colorful, and a thoughtful examination of women’s myriad roles in society. An early proponent of feminism her work is neither preachy, nor didactic. She has never been shrill, and there is little difference between the work she has always created for herself, and what she creates for clients.

She has had innumerable exhibitions throughout the U.S. and abroad and her work is in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Düsseldorf Szépművészeti Múzeum and the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC. and shown in the Louvre in Paris, and the Kunst Museum in Düsseldorf. Nessim’s illustrations have appeared on the covers of Time, and Rolling Stone among others and two of her sculptures were destroyed when the Twin Towers came down on September 11.

She was the Chairperson of Illustration at Parsons The New School for Design from 1992–2004, and before that was a professor in the MFA Computer Art department at the School of Visual Arts. During her tenure at Parsons she brought the school into the digital age.

Barbara was recently appointed the first Artist Laureate by the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA, where her work is also part of the permanent collection. Her enthusiasm and passion for art and culture have not been diminished by time, but rather seem to extend to every facet of her life. She surrounds herself with beauty and spends her days creating art, art that increasingly has a wider audience.

Q. You have always drawn from your sketchbooks for your illustrations. Is your process different for the installation pieces?

A. Yes and no. Since 2003 I've completed three installation projects. Each one had a different inspiration. The first was for a residential building lobby. (www.barbaranessim.com/2000s_600washington_1.html)

As subject matter I thought about the goings and comings to and from one's home. Two artworks 70" x 56" were created. The drawings, which were inspired by my sketchbooks, floated within the 'windows' and 'rooms' represented by a series of rectangles. The abstraction of rectangles from afar gave way to the intimacy of seeing the drawings close up.

This exhibition marks a return to the New York art scene for Müller, after a hiatus of 17 years. During this time the artist developed a new approach to figurative painting, working with oil and turpentine on black denim. Born in Morges, Switzerland, Müller was a prominent figure in the New York art scene of the late 1960s. He was an assistant to Richard Serra, and then joined the staff of Arts magazine, where he became editor-in-chief. In that role he worked closely with Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol, and other noted artists. He authored The New Avant Garde in 1972, and then resigned his editorship to return to painting.

Setting a new precedent for city-wide collaboration among major art institutions, the 2011 Pittsburgh Biennial is co-organized by Carnegie Museum of Art, Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University, The Andy Warhol Museum, and Biennial founders Pittsburgh Filmmakers and Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. Each of the five partner institutions will present a distinct exhibition of work by artists connected to the Pittsburgh region, reflecting each organization’s curatorial focus.

The Miller Gallery at CMU’s presentation, organized by gallery director Astria Suparak, features artists who work collaboratively, harmonizing individual perspectives, ideas, and talents. Embodying self-sufficiency within a cooperative spirit, the collectives and collaborators encourage us to reassess our assumptions and values, reveal the global in the local and the personal in the political, and imagine alternate realities and possible futures. The exhibition unveils four new installations and two recent projects, and includes sculpture, printmaking, painting, video, publications and workshops from artists Justseeds, Lize Mogel, Sarah Ross, and Ryan Griffis, subRosa, Temporary Services, Transformazium.

Prevailing Human Spirit, The Exhibition
A commemorative book produced by Co-Chair Wendy Popp, 100 pages, hardbound, the price is being negotiated but will be $75 or less, with proceeds going to funds supporting families still in recovery.

In the weeks that followed the catastrophic events of September 11, 2001, artists of an international community responded with imagery that honored the heroism and humanity demonstrated by countless individuals by contributing to Prevailing Human Spirit, The Exhibition, a memorial exhibition that was held at the Museum of American Illustration in January 2002. Prevailing Human Spirit, The Exhibition, a commemorative book produced by Co-Chair Wendy Popp, will help mark the 10th anniversary of one of the darkest periods in our country's history. Seventy-five pieces of art are shown in full color, with the story of the exhibition, what it earned, for whom and where it traveled. Foreword by former Director of the Society of Illustrators, Terry Brown, text by Wendy Popp and comment by Rudy Gutierrez. The works within the pages are a selection from the original exhibit that toured to such additional venues as the United Nations, The New-York Historical Society, The Huntington Museum and The Wethersfield Historical Society in 2002. Professionals in our industry such as Guy Billout, Cathie Bleck, Peter de Seve, Milton Glaser, Rudy Gutierrez, Frances Jetter, Viktor Koen, William Low, Barbara Nessim, and Tim O'Brien, to name a few, are represented within the 100 pages. Every artist and volunteer who participated has also been named in the book. If you are interested in reserving a copy, please contact prevailinghumanspirit@gmail.com with your and information will be sent to you. Books will be available for purchase in the coming month.

Industry Advice
Advice from an industry of one, but a determined one.

I know we’ve been over this territory before, but repetition can be helpful from time to time, to reinforce common-sense advice. While Ms. Ramsey’s etiquette tips may be aimed at businesses, they are nonetheless relevant for freelance illustrators as well. I particularly like #12; of course I am an editor so I read all my messages before I hit send. If I want people to hire me to write copy for them, badly written and spelled messages are not the best advertisement for my talents.

One other thing to consider when entering into social networking, don’t start a blog and then update it every 6 months. If potential clients (or friends for that matter) visit your site from time to time and find the same content, they will lose interest and go elsewhere. Plan to update on a regular schedule and put some effort into crafting text and images that are compelling, news and project descriptions that make people want to bookmark your site or add you to their “friends” list.

Business Etiquette Tips for Social Media: 12 Tips From Georgia Business Etiquette Expert Lydia Ramsey

Business people use social media networking to build their careers, promote their business and grow their reputations. But they might be doing more harm than good if they violate the etiquette of social networking.
