Locals are up in arms after one of the sculptures lining the popular Sea Point Promenade was vandalised. The piece, which is part of a series of works by Marieke Prinsloo-Rowe, were meant to be taken down earlier this year before city officials requested they remain up for another two years. This is the second incident of vandalism against the sculptures. More here.

GIPCA in Hot Water:

 

This weekend, GIPCA will be hosting the  Hot Water Festival, a series of performances and discussions that look at climate change and art. The event takes place at Hiddingh Campus from 14 – 16 October 2011. More here.

 

New duo heads up UJ Arts & Culture:

Local playwright Grace Meadows and creative producer Ashraf Johaardien will be heading up four campuses at the University of Johannesburg. More here.

  

Africa 101:

 

The African Arts Institute, in partnership with Goethe-Institut, will host a week-long African arts campus in Cape Town later this month. Play readings, film screenings and artists’ studio walkabouts will be presented alongside series of lunch-time lectures and after-hours short courses at Artscape, from 24 to 29 October. Pinky Promise Panel Discussion:

 

As part of Pierre Crocquet's exhibition Pinky Promise, the Johannesburg Art Gallery will host a panel discussion on childhood sexual abuse. It takes place on Saturday 15 October, 10 am, at Johannesburg Art Gallery. More here.

 
 

The Fourth Annual Thuthuka Exhibition:

 

The Fourth Annual Thuthuka Exhibition and Awards will take place at the University of Johannesburg from 12 – 26 October 2011. The Awards ceremony will take place on 11 October presided over by host, Anele Mdoda. More here.

 

Twidle Talks at GIPCA Lecture:

 

Dr. Hedley Twidle explores colonial encounters through an examination of EM Forster’s A Passage to India, in a lecture entitled Nothing Extraordinary: E.M. Forster and the English Limit. The lecture is a part of GIPCA’s ongoing Great Texts/Big Questions series and takes place Thurs 13 October 17.30 at Hiddingh Hall. More here.

The third cycle of the 2011/2012 financial year sees 9 partnerships between business and arts projects awarded project-specific grants, which have become an important part of the South African funding landscape. More here.

  

Andries Botha Battles Local Municipality:

 

A press release, sent out after artist Andries Botha institute legal proceedings against the eThekwini Municipality over the fate of his The Three Elephants has been released. “If eThekwini has its way, my sculpture, which was approved and commissioned by them, will be torn down,” said Andries Botha. For Art South Africa 10.1 online, Lindie Ward, the curator of the Powerhouse Museum, writes about the 'Love Lace' exhibition currently showing there. The show will run until April 2012. You can read it here.

Two Bronze medals for SA at the Genée 2011:

 

Mlindi Kulashe and Ashley Scott from the Western Cape take the bronze medals in the 2011 Genée International Ballet Competition. More here.
