DON'T MISS THIS SEASON'S BIGGEST
MULTIMEDIA MUSIC EXPERIENCE!

AS FEATURED IN THE TIMES,
THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
TIME OUT NEW YORK,
AND NEW YORK MAGAZINE...

a grandiose theatrical concert featuring
the highly anticipated collaboration between
DARCY JAMES ARGUE
and celebrated graphic artist
DANIJEL ZEZELJ

At the BAM Next Wave Festival
starting TOMORROW
November 9 - 12. Get your tickets here.

"Expanding his sonic palette as never before, Mr. Argue consciously integrated music from different cultures of Brooklyn for the multimedia piece by adding elements of Balkan brass, French café music and even marching-band music. Because there is no libretto, the entire narrative is told through the music and Mr. Zezelj's powerful and chilling illustrations. The shifting images act as a sort of time machine, forward-moving and seemingly implacable."
- The Wall Street Journal (read the full article here)

"Brooklyn Babylon, a new show mounted by the consistently surprising Beth Morrison Projects as part of BAM's Next Wave Festival, uses media to deal with an all-American subject: the conflict between urban growth and the urge to protect neighborhoods and communities."
- Time Out New York (read the full article here)

"Zezelj, a globally published comics artist... is an experienced hand at musical animation and improvising in paint, having worked for some years alongside saxophonist Jessica Lurie. A brief clip filled with tactile charcoal washes and cutout figures that seem to mix Romare Bearden's swing with the moral authority of, say, Peter Kuper, offers tremendous promise for this quintessentially American aesthetic melting pot."
- Time Out New York (read the full article here)

"When the Canadian composer Darcy James Argue made the mad gambit to redeploy the dusty big-band form to make cutting-edge music, it wasn't mere audacity."
- Eric Benson New York Magazine (read the full article here)

ABOUT THE MUSIC
BB- SUNY- 1_2
Composer Darcy James Argue's
18-Piece Bigband, Secret Society

Acclaimed composer Darcy James Argue brings his unique aesthetic to BROOKLYN BABYLON's hour-long score. Performed live by his 18-piece bigband, Secret Society, Argue creates an immersive sonic landscape that seamlessly weaves together the strands of Brooklyn's musical tapestry. Drawing on everything from brass bands, dance-punk grooves, and Victorian steam-driven calliopes, Argue's music pulses with the sound of Brooklyn.

"Maximalist music of impressive complexity and immense
entertainment value, in your face and then in your head."
- The Village Voice on Darcy James Argue's Secret Society

ABOUT THE LIVE PAINTING & ANIMATIONS
Brooklyn Babylon - Danijel Art
Celebrated Graphic Artist
Danijel Zezelj

Conjuring the baroque majesty of Fritz Lang's Metropolis and the gritty social narrative of Walker Evans' photography, acclaimed graphic artist Danijel Zezelj's animation brings the rich visual imagery of BROOKLYN BABYLON to life. Each frame is painted by Zezelj on a large wood panel, then digitally captured, processed and sequenced into an animated film, projected onto a giant scrim. Over the course of the performance, Zezelj also live-paints a vast cityscape, visible between animated chapters, which gradually fills a 30 by 4 feet canvas.

"...a tribute to the refuge and grace of the imagination."
- The Boston Globe (about Zezelj's graphic novel, Stray Dogs)

"It's not insignificant that both artists have come to Brooklyn from other countries; neither has gotten over seeing it with fresh eyes and a sense of myth."
- The New York Times
