NEW YORK,
NY (November 9, 2011) - Galerie
Gmurzynska
is pleased to announce an exhibition of rare and important works of
art, many never before seen in New York, at the premiere of Pavilion of
Art and Design New York, Booth 2, from November 11 – 14,
2011, located at the Park Avenue Armory, 643 Park Avenue, New
York (between 66th and 67th Streets). One of the main highlights will be the only two unique
Kurt Schwitters sculptures still held in private hands, Sword
(1930/1935) and Dancer (1943).
This is the first time that either work has been publicly exhibited in
New York. They are part of a small body of sculptural work of which the
rest are held in important museum collections around the world. These
pieces were extremely influential on the work of Cy Twombly, who
visited
Galerie Gmurzynska throughout the 1970s to study Schwitter’s
sculptural
work.
Robert
Indiana’s mid-career sculpture, “Indiana“
(1979),
created the year after he departed New York City and moved into
seclusion on a remote Maine island, will return to New York to be
exhibited publicly for the first time.
Three important
collages from the 1930s by modern master Joan Miró
will also be on view. Created at the most vital moment in the
artist’s
career, similar examples from the collection of the Museum of Modern
Art
were recently shown at Miro’s retrospective at the Tate Museum in
London.
Contemporary
works will also be represented along with individual works by noteworthy
young artists Marco Perego and Scott Campbell.
