Kurt Schwitters:
Sword,1930-1935, Wood painted white
NEW YORK, NY (November 11, 2011)
- Galerie
Gmurzynska is pleased to announce today the winner of
the Best Fine Art category for Kurt Schwitters sculpture
Sword (1930/1935) awarded by the
inaugural edition of Pavilion Art &
Design New York.
Exhibiting the only
two unique Kurt Schwitters sculptures still held in private hands,
Sword
(1930/1935) and Dancer (1943), this is the first time that
either
work has been publicly exhibited in New York. They are part of a small body
of
sculptural work of which the rest are held in important museum
collections
around the world. These pieces were extremely influential on the work of
Cy Twombly, who visited Galerie
Gmurzynska throughout the 1970s to study Schwitter’s sculptural
work.
Also on exhibit are
rare and important works of art, many never before seen in New York,
including
Robert Indiana’s large-scale sculpture “Indiana“
(1979), created the
year after he departed New York City and moved into seclusion on a remote
Maine
island. Three important collages from the 1930s by modern master Joan
Miró will
also be on view. Created at the most vital moment in the artist’s
career,
similar examples from the collection of the Museum of Modern Art were
recently
shown at Miró’s retrospective
at the Tate Museum in London. Contemporary works will also be represented
along
with individual works by noteworthy young artists Marco Perego and
Scott
Campbell.
The exhibition will be on view at
Pavilion of Art and Design New York, Booth
2, from November 11 – 14,
2011, 11am-8pm everyday, until 5pm on Monday,
located
at the Park Avenue Armory, 643 Park
Avenue, New York.
