ATELIER
THE INVENTORS OF TRADITION
COLLECTION 2011
25.-27.11.11
RECEPTION 24.11.11, 6-9 pm
Artist Lucy McKenzie (Glasgow, based in Brussels) and designer Beca Lipscombe (Edinburgh), working under the name Atelier, present their first fashion collection encompassing high quality knitwear, wovens, raincoats, workwear and accessories. Using the best of Scottish manufacturing, they realise a wardrobe for working men and women, specifically artists and those in creative and artisan professions. The collection has been developed as a part of the recent research project in collaboration with the Glasgow based independent design office Panel (Catriona Duffy and Lucy McEachan), The Inventors of Tradition. This project explored created notions of national identity through the context of the Scottish fashion and textile industry since the 1930s and the idea that quality has become synonymous with 'traditional'. Atelier's first collection extends their research into reality and celebrates what is possible within Scottish industry today.

Their collaborators are some of the most established manufacturers still producing in Scotland today including Mackintosh, Caerlee Mills, McRostie of Glasgow, Hawick Cashmere, Begg Scotland and Janette Murray Handknits. Together with tailor Steven Purvis, Lucy McKenzie has designed a bespoke collection of artist's work coats, inspired by historical models that are practical and beautiful. Beca Lipscombe presents a selection of high quality cashmere and purewool knitwear and wovens to be worn in combination with the work coats. A sample collection of the garments will be presented, for sale, at each venue throughout November 2011. These showrooms, designed and maned by Atelier, will offer customers the opportunity to try on garments and to discuss sizing, colour, material, production methods and the design process. Each individual piece of clothing is made to order for the client, encouraging a cost-effective practice, preventing waste and excess, and resulting in an item that is a considered combination of elegance, practicality and delayed gratification. In these and collection showrooms to come, Atelier's primary motive is self-expression, but also to forge a long-term relationship and engagement with the client - to listen to and understand the wearer's desires as they experience the clothes in daily life.
