MAKE IT A GALERIA WEEKEND: Friday & Saturday nights this weekend
Casa Caliente & Son Jarocho usher in December
Friday, December 2: 7-9pm
Co-Hosted by Galeria de la Raza & La Pocha Nostra
As December brings in the start of winter, it also brings in the spirit of merriment.
Galeria is hosting two very special events this weekend to kick off the month of Diciembre in a celebratory mode.
This Friday, Galeria will co-host a housewarming party for our new tenants, La Pocha Nostra, unlike any you’ve been to.
Casa Caliente promises to showcase electronica, conceptual tarot readings, and cocktails, with featured performances from Gal*in_dog, Ginger Murray, Sara Shelton Mann, Larry Bogad, and emcee Guillermo Gómez-Peña. The inaugural collaboration night between both organizations is one not to be missed. This event also coincides with the Lower 24th Street Merchants & Neighbors Association’s
First Friday series, where businesses up and down 24th St will be open afterhours with specials, deals, and much more. December's theme is "$3-$5," perfect for the whole family!
Saturday, December 3: 12-5pm
Son Jarocho Workshops
Galeria will host a series of free workshops of Son Jarocho of Southern Veracruz conducted by Russell Rodriguez, Artemio Posadas,
and Laura Cambron. Participants will be led through an exploration of each of three essential elements of the Son Jarocho:
music and playing technique (with a focus on the requinto and jarana), poetry, and dance. The workshops will be held in both the main gallery and annex space, Studio 24.
Admission to the workshops are free, but registration is required!
Saturday, December 3
Son Jarocho Encuentro: 6pm, Fandango: 7:30pm
The Son Jarocho workshop sessions will be followed by an encuentro (a concert featuring various California soneros), and a fandango, the convivial social event centered around the Son Jarocho, that is open to the public. Participating groups include
Artemio Posadas, El Mosquito, Son de la Tierra, Los Hijos de José (Russell Rodriguez, Federico Zuñiga, and Chris Gonzales Clarke), Laura Cambrón (Son del Centro and Maya Jupiter), and Quetzal Flores (Quetzal)
.
Admission:
Free for Galeria members
This program is made possible in part thanks to the generous support of the Alliance of California Traditional Arts (ACTA).

COMMUNITY
Gingerbread Workshops: December 8-15
The Sugar Skull Gallery is back! But this time instead of calaveras to decorate, it’s gingerbread houses to commemorate
the holiday season. Bonafide teacher Michele Simons from the popular sugar skull workshops hosted in Studio 24 during this fall’s workshops is back to tackle gingerbread houses this time around.
Shop Local: Mission Community Market
Thursdays in December
As part of San Francisco’s current mantra, consider buying local this season to support local businesses, merchants, and organizations. Mission Community Market on 22nd Street provides a great opportunity to purchase
gifts, groceries, and goods fit for all of your family and friends.
