DANS LE CADRE DE L'EXPOSITION TRAFIC : L’ART CONCEPTUEL AU CANADA 1965-1980   IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE EXHIBITION TRAFFIC : CONCEPTUAL ART IN CANADA 1965-1980            LE MERCREDI 1er FÉVRIER À 18H À la Galerie, en anglais ENTRÉE LIBRE À partir de la fin des années 1960, les artistes travaillant au Canada entament, avec leurs confrères américains, un dialogue qui est, pour une large part, sans précédent. Un grand nombre adoptent la notion de la frontière comme moyen pour réfléchir à cette relation transnationale, récemment découverte et souvent tendue. La présente conférence porte sur quelques-uns de ces cas – illustrés, entre autres, par des œuvres de General Idea, Greg Curnoe, Dennis Oppenheim et Carl Andre – qui traitent explicitement de la frontière internationale. De telles démarches ouvrent sur des débats politiques plus vastes qui ont alors cours, marqués par une méfiance profondément ancrée envers un impérialisme culturel américain et par un nationalisme canadien concomitant. Adam Welch est doctorant en histoire de l’art à la University of Toronto et sa thèse s’intitule Borderline Research: Art between Canada and the United States, 1965–1980. Il écrit notamment sur l’art minimal, conceptuel et critique des institutions, ainsi que sur les systèmes artistiques et les réseaux qui relient artistes, conservateurs, musées, galeries et centres d’artistes autogérés. Sa maîtrise en arts, obtenue à la Columbia University, est un compte rendu de l’œuvre technologique de l’artiste vancouvérois Rodney Graham. Welch a travaillé à la conservation au Musée des beaux-arts du Canada, au Whitney Museum of American Art, et, plus récemment, à la Justina M. Barnicke Gallery de la University of Toronto. Many took up the figure of the border as a means of reflecting on this newfound, and often fraught, transnational relationship. This talk will trace a few of these cases—including works by General Idea, Greg Curnoe, Dennis Oppenheim and Carl Andre—which engaged explicitly with the international boundary. Such engagements open onto larger political debates of the period: deep-seated fears of American cultural imperialism and a concomitant Canadian nationalism. Adam Welch is a doctoral candidate in Art History at the University of Toronto; his dissertation is entitled Borderline Research: Art between Canada and the United States, 1965–1980. His writing centres on minimal, conceptual and institution critical art, as well as art systems and networks among artists, curators, museums, galleries and artist-run centres. His MA thesis from Columbia University was an account of the technological work of Vancouver-based artist Rodney Graham.
