Gallery Talk: Adam Berg and Lisa Melandri

Join Los Angeles-based artist Adam Berg and Deputy Director Lisa Melandri for a conversation about Adam Berg: Endangered Spaces and NY/LA, SMMoA's new annual project room series.

Lisa Melandri is curator of Adam Berg: Endangered Spaces--a new, multi-dimensional video, sculpture, and photo installation that explores the relationship between man-made environments and displaced wildlife. In this work, Berg identifies a parallel future between endangered animals and threatened architectural spaces.

Adam Berg (b. 1962) was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, and works and lives in Los Angeles. He attended the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome, studied architecture, landscape architecture, and philosophy at the University of Toronto, and philosophy at York University, Toronto. He earned undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate degrees from the University of Haifa, Israel. He currently teaches at Otis College of Art and Design, CSU Dominguez Hills, and California Institute of the Arts.

Rothfarb Talk 2-16-12

Thursday, February 16, 7 pm
Visions of India in California: Bringing South Asia to the Sunshine State with Edward L. Rothfarb

Independent scholar Edward L. Rothfarb discusses the mythology of India in California's visual culture. What, if anything, does Beatrice Wood's interest in Indian art and spirituality have to do with 20th Century Fox's 1955 film, The Rains of Ranchipur, the domed Lake Shrine and Retreat in Pacific Palisades, and Norton Simon's collection of South Asian sculpture? Rothfarb will explore the visual connections between California and India, each the font of rich imaginaries.

Edward Rothfarb is a scholar and art historian whose work focuses on India. His first book, In the Land of the Taj Mahal, was published by Henry Holt and Company in 1998. His forthcoming book, entitled Orchha and Beyond: Design at the Court of Raja Bir Singh Dev Bundela will be published this Spring by Marg (Mumbai).

Member and Patron since 2009

"As a co-owner of the Sears Peyton Gallery, in New York and Los Angeles, as well as a mother of three children, the Santa Monica Museum of Art has a special pull for me. SMMoA provides sophisticated and innovative exhibitions in a welcoming, family-friendly environment--all in our backyard.

I remember bringing my kids to see Elias Sime: Eye of the Needle, Eye of the Heart in 2009. Seeing my children entranced by the accompanying film with Peter Sellars was incredibly powerful; as the years have passed, I have become more and more impressed with the Museum. Since becoming a SMMoA member, I have felt increasingly connected to my community."

"When you become involved and support something as pure and fantastic as SMMoA, you receive so much more in return."

Please join Macie and help sustain diversity, innovation, and discovery in contemporary art. Become a member and receive exclusive access to exhibition previews, inventive programs, educational workshops, and great discounts on eclectic shopping.
