28TH 'MARIN SHOW: ART OF THE AMERICAS' SHOWCASES HISTORIC AND CONTEMPORARY INDIGENOUS ART AND CULTURE


OPENING NIGHT PREVIEW TO BENEFIT 'HOMEWARD BOUND', WITH BITES FROM CELEBRATED PUERTO RICAN RESTAURANT 'SOL FOOD'

(San Rafael, CA - Januray 2012) On February 25-26, 2012 the annual Marin Show: Art of the Americas celebrates its 28th year at the Marin Civic Center in San Rafael, CA. Considered the most significant ongoing showcase focused on a combination of antique American Indian, Pre-Columbian, Spanish Colonial and contemporary American Indian art, the show attracts top dealers, passionate collectors, artists, and the culture-curious from across the world. The Opening Night Preview on Feb. 24th will feature hors d'oeuvres by premiere Marin-based Puerto Rican restaurant SOL FOOD with chef Sol Hernandez who will also be in attendance.

Offering something for everyone, the show's main floor focuses on antique material, with the adjacent hotel ballroom showcasing contemporary Native and Latin art and artists. Exhibited art includes jewelry, textiles, baskets, pottery, sculpture, beadwork, paintings, books and photography for sale, ranging in price from low 100s to 100s of thousands of dollars, offering quality authentic material for both the first time buyers and seasoned collectors alike.

The Opening Night Preview held on Friday, February 24th from 6:30-9:00pm, benefits the acclaimed local charity Homeward Bound of Marin for the third year in a row. All proceeds from the Opening Night will benefit Homeward Bound of Marin, which is Marin County's chief provider of shelter and residential services for homeless families and individuals. Educational lectures and premier book signings will be held throughout the weekend.

  • 9:00am, Lecture: "The Initial Settlement of North America", presented by Jeb Taylor, associate editor for Prehistoric American, and author of Projectile Points of the High Plains.
  • 1:00pm, Lecture: "Feathers and Beads: Unique Ceremonial Regalia of the San Francisco Bay Area", presented by Betty Goerke, author and retired Professor of Anthropology at College of Marin.
  • 2:00pm, Book signing: The Master Weavers, by Mark Winter of Historic Toadlena Trading Post, is the definitive work on the textiles of the Toadlena/Two Grey Hills weaving region from over 20 years of research, with 100s of photographs, Master Weavers genealogies, and details of the lives and works of 90 Master Weavers.
  • 3:00pm, Book signing: American Indian Jewelry II: A-L, by Greg and Angie Schaaf is one of two volumes, the reference source of factual information for American Indian jewelry, featuring 1,800 artist biographies, organized and lavishly illustrated in full color.

Sun., Feb. 26
  • 10:00am, Lecture: Friends of Ethnic Art presents "18th Century Native American Art from the Great Lakes Region: A Legacy of Diplomacy, Warfare, Fashion and Curiosity" by Ruth B. Phillips, Professor of Art History at Carleton University and author of several books and one of the leading researchers of historical Native American art of the Woodlands.
  • 1:00pm, Book signing: Horses and Bridles of the American Indians, by Jody and Ned Martin (Hawkhill Press), the most comprehensive collection of Native bridles to date. With 500 color images of bridles from 25 museums and private collections, it documents new information on the spread of the horse to 125 tribes of North America.

Other educational elements include an extensive display by the Marin Museum of the American Indian honoring their rich history in the area.

Presented by veteran show producer KR Martindale Show Management, the Marin Show: Art of the Americas works in association with the Antique Tribal Art Dealers Association, The Marin Museum of the American Indian, The Miwok Archaeological Preserve of Marin, and with media partners American Indian Art Magazine, and Western Art Collector Magazine.
