Dia Internacional de la Mujer / International Women's Day
Thursday, March 8
Open mic sign-ups begin up at 7:15pm
$5 Admission, or FREE with food dish to share/Galería membership

This month, Lunada honors mothers' tongues, women's voices and stories as the full moon rises on International Women's Day. March's two featured performers are powerhouses, forces, and perfect storms waiting to enthrall. Poet Leticia Hernandez-Linares features teatro-infused poemsongs from Mucha Muchacha, Too Much Girl, and interdisciplinary artist Johanna "YeYe" Suarez weaves spells with poetry and music influences by the African Disapora in Latin America. Hosted by series curator Sandra Garcia Rivera.

"7th Moon" - 2010
Next exhibition:
Traded Moons, new works by Geri Montano
Opening reception Saturday, April 7
7:30pm-10pm

The circle has long been associated with many motifs: the feminine, the moon, a medicine wheel or shield. In this new show, San Francisco mixed media artist Geri Montano takes the symbol of the circle in addressing sex trafficking of indigenous women. Using this motif alongside art as a healing component, Traded Moons features over 40 circular panels documentating and illustrating ideas of power, freedom, pain, and hope during a time where over 80% of those involved in human trafficking are women. A portion of works on display were created by sex traffic survivors.

A Walk Along Cesar Chavez Street: The Cesar Chavez East Community Design Plan
Exhibition closes March 17

A Walk Along Cesar Chavez Street (The Cesar Chavez East Community Design Plan) is the result of a Service Learning Class conducted by artist Sergio De La Torre, entitled ARTIST AS CITIZEN: DOCUMENTARY PRACTICES. In this class, students from the University of San Francisco work together with a local non-profit and develop projects that help them understand social and political issues around the city. Working with the San Francisco Planning Department, the Cesar Chavez East Community Design Plan details a community vision for an improved and imagined corridor between the Bayview and Mission neighborhoods, including transit design, economic growth, and neighborhood camaraderie. Visit la Galeria in the exhibition's last days to explore the ways in which simple connections can bring tremendous hope, as well as draw on our idea wall of your dreams for a better street.
