At the IHME Contemporary Art Festival people donated their heartbeats, played with shadows, and contemplated collecting
“It’s wonderful that I got to take part in The Heart Archive! You get to join in personally to an appropriate extent and to experience something new. To my mind, an extremely easily approachable artform, and I have recommended it to everyone I know. Applause, applause!”
“Thanks once again for one of the best events in Helsinki this year! The IHME Days are always of a commendably high standard!”
- Quotations from Festival audience feedback -
This year, the IHME Contemporary Art Festival was staged in four cities. At Rikhardinkatu Library in Helsinki, Joensuu Regional Library, Rovaniemi City Library and Vaasa City Library sounds of heartbeats were recorded for Christian Boltanski’s The Heart Archive, which was the IHME Project 2012. The 2516 heartbeat recordings made during the Project are now on their way to The Heart Archive on the Japanese island of Teshima.
The IHME Days in Helsinki took up the themes of collecting and the archive via discussions, films, workshops and music. Jaakko Niemelä’s shadow work Shadowplay had city dwellers of all ages playing with shadows in Helsinki’s city centre and at Myyrmäki in Vantaa. Festival events inspired by Boltanski’s The Heart Archive were also held in Joensuu, Rovaniemi and Vaasa.
Recordings of the IHME Days lectures can now be viewed on IHME’s YouTube channel. In autumn 2012, an electronic publication about the Festival will be posted on: ihmefestival.fi. We at IHME are happy to receive feedback to help us develop our work. You can also give feedback online.
The 2013 IHME Days will be on 12-14.4.2013.
