DAC Provides Documentation on South Africa Pavilion at 2011 Venice Biennale

ArtThrob broke news last week that the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) has handed over documentation concerning South Africa’s participation at the 2011 Venice Biennale. This follows a protracted enquiry procedure which involved the submission of parliamentary papers of inquiry into Minister of Arts and Culture Paul Mashatile’s appointment of Monna Mokoena as commissioner of the South African pavilion at Venice, as well as the spending of R10 million of state funds on what the minister himself has called a “private initiative”. Graceland Revisited

The 25th anniversary of musician Paul Simon’s groundbreaking album Graceland, released in late 1986, has been commemorated by a documentary film by American filmmaker Joe Berlinger.  Titled Under African Skies, the film revisits the controversy surrounding Simon’s visit to South Africa in 1985 to record the album with South African musicians including guitarist Ray Phiri and vocal group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Unbearable lightness: The Exuberance Project
Clare Butcher

There’s a scene in the film Mary Poppins where the Banks children and the rather eccentric chimneysweep Bert (played by Dick van Dyke, of course) visit a friend who is prone to hysterical laughter. We find this friend floating near the ceiling of his attic home, high, it would seem, on the giggles. The laughter is contagious and by the end of the scene it is only the schoolmarmish gravitas of Ms Poppins that brings the group back to earth. Playing the hysterical gentleman was, in fact, actor Ed Wynn whose comedy sketch with Buster Keaton was shown by Jane Taylor as part of the Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts’ (GIPCA’s) Exuberance Project last weekend. Taylor, along with many other contributors from various fields, had been asked by the project’s curators, Raél Salley (Senior lecturer in Discourse and Painting at Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town) and Jay Pather (GIPCA Director), to consider and celebrate ‘what is extremely good, effusive and uninhibitedly enthusiastic’ in Africa. EXHIBITIONS

Maja Maljević's solo exhibition Revisited  shows at the Nirox Project space at Arts on Main until 17 May.
The exhibition features a new body of paintings made based on 24 small-format works produced while Maljević was on a residency at the Nirox Foundation in 2011. From these works, titled Nirox Diaries, Maljević draws elements such as shapes, lines and colours, reconfiguring them into the paintings on display in this show.
