BEN CAMERON stimulates a dialogue to promote
sustainability for Lehigh Valley arts organizations

Whose Business is the Arts?

Ben Cameron, program director for the arts at the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and one of the nation’s most eloquent speakers on the power of the performing arts, will deliver the keynote address at this unique forum.

Like it or not, change is the ever accelerating constant that guides our lives today, and like the famous line in Alice in Wonderland, we must run as fast as we can to stay in the game – and if we want to get anywhere, we must run twice as fast as that. Nimbleness, flexibility, responsiveness, creative opportunism: all will be valued as never before.”

WHOSE BUSINESS IS THE ARTS? THURSDAY, JUNE 7, 2012
DeSales University Center, Center Valley Campus from 8:30-11:30 a.m.
This event is sponsored by
The Lehigh Valley Arts Council and the Lehigh Valley Partnership

Once every five years, the region’s arts and business leaders come together at Whose Business is the Arts? to discuss the state of the arts, economy, and quality of life in our region. Through expert presenters and interactive sessions, the forum enables participants to explore the power of our cultural community to contribute to a growing local economy, and provides ways to expand the positive influence of art and culture on the quality of life in the region.

Meet Ben Cameron live at this event and engage in the conversation!

Dr. Roland Kushner, Professor of Business at Muhlenberg College whose research is frequently cited by the Brookings Institue as well as the Americans for the Arts, will discuss the implications of the most recent "Arts & Economic Prosperity" study. This study from the Americans for the Arts includes specific data from 91 Lehigh Valley arts organizations, and results indicate that growth of the arts in our region continue to outpace the national average.

Todd Watkins, Executive Director of the Baker Institute for Entrepreneurship, Creativity, and Innovation at Lehigh University, will facilitate a break-out session that explores nonprofit entrepreneurship. To thrive as arts organizations, we much each examine our capacity for innovation in sustaining an organization's financial future while preserving its artistic mission.
