"Dust"
by Xenia Nikolskaya
On view at the Townhouse First Floor Gallery from May 6 through June 13, Xenia Nikolsaya’s “Dust” is both a photographic exhibition exploring Egypt’s abandoned architectural heritage, and a publication of texts and images that was launched at Townhouse on May 6. “Dust” explores the conditions and relevance of empty architectural spaces in Egypt, presenting an entwined dualism: dust as materiality that layers the city, literally tracing the passage of time upon urban objects – but also as a temporal metaphor that registers these changes on the level of memories, both past and present. “Dust” was completed in January 2011. The accompanying book has now been released by Dewi Lewis Publishing and contains a total of 70 images from thirty locations in Egypt, including Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, Minya, Esna, Port Said and villages around the Delta.

PUBLIC SPACE: CAIRO |
presentations on public art
Join us on Tuesday, June 5, for an evening of presentation given by participants of the PUBLIC SPACE: CAIRO workshops. Participants will present small talks, videos, proposals, and public work completed during the month-long workshop series this past April and May. Participants will present panels, and provide opportunity to discuss the state of visual culture in Cairo, the role of public art, and the new projects that are being proposed for public space.
PUBLIC SPACE: CAIRO is a collaborative, workshop-based project that explores the possibilities for engaging with art and design in public spaces. In a moment when public space in Cairo is being radically reconsidered, the workshop engages participants and members of their communities to explore ideas of what impactful public art might look like in Cairo today.

Artist Talk
Rana Hamadeh &
Eva Frapiccini
Rana Hamadeh
For her second public lecture during her residency at the Townhouse gallery, Rana Hamadeh will take us on a docu-fictive journey through her past and future work (and life), focusing on her ongoing expansive project GRAPHIS No 127 that she initiated in 2008. Blurring the borders between the artist talk and the work of art, the document and the conditions by which the document is produced, Hamadeh's performative lecture will reflect upon her practice, which she describes as an evolving cartography of narratives, conversations, debates, objects, images, texts and appropriated works of other artists, whose historical, geographical and political significance are in constant mutation.
GRAPHIS No 127 is an issue of an international graphic design magazine that was penetrated by a bullet during the Lebanese civil war. The artist uses the magazine and the narratives generated around it, as catalysts for debating the conditions of image production, as well as the conditions and mechanisms of spectatorial engagement with the image produced.
Eva Frapiccini
Eva Frapiccini's practice questions both her own cultural identity, and that of the generations spanning from the 1940s to the 1980s. As she attempts to trace a collective memory, Frapiccini’s method involves the systematic research and analysis of archival materials (images, films, objects and texts), as well as the collection of testimonies.
By taking documents out of their original contexts to tell a new true story, or by creating believable fictional characters with their own apparatuses of fake documentation and specimens, Frapiccini appropriates recent history and socio-cultural developments, as well as art history, literary history and the history of science. The artist attempts to deconstruct the appearance of reliability and the ethics behind our systems of knowledge and belief by unmasking spaces such as the media, libraries and museums, attempting a new definition of what could truly be considered "auctoritas." Her often collaborative practice moves harmoniously from advertising campaigns to dance performances, from photography to sound installation, from public art intervention to sculptural installations, from film to exhibition-making.
Frapiccini is currently focusing on a research project exploring the borders of collective imaginations found in different cultures through people's descriptions of dreams. Stemming from an interest in the Jungian theory of the collective unconscious, she aims to trace the changes archetypical images by collecting audio recordings of dreams throughout her travels, which inform her ongoing project, “Dreams’Time Capsule.”

"Garbage Warrior"
Directed by Oliver Hodge
Garbage Warrior is a feature-length documentary film telling the story of US architect Michael Reynolds and his fight to introduce self sustainable housing. Beyond being an extraordinary tale of triumph over bureaucracy, Garbage Warrior is an intimate portrait of a passionate individual and his dream of improving the world we live in. Michael Reynolds brings an environmental consciousness to his work. Reynolds designs homes that are built from disregarded materials, such as old beer cans, used tires, empty water bottles, and other materials that had been thrown away. More importantly, Reynolds' projects are homes that significantly reduce or eliminate dependence on outside power, water, and sewage sources.

"Waste land"
Directed by Lucy Walker
Filmed over nearly three years, “Waste Land” follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world's largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores”—self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint” the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Director Lucy Walker (DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND, BLINDSIGHT and COUNTDOWN TO ZERO) and co-directors João Jardim and Karen Harley have great access to the entire process and, in the end, offer stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit.

Presentation
by Basurama
Basurama in collaboration with Elnamla Cultural Resources, architect and urban planner Omar Nagati and the Townhouse Gallery, with the support of the Spanish Embassy in Egypt, present UrbanSolidWaste Cairo workshop. As their 3 week workshop comes to an end, the Basurama team will give an overview of the work produced with the workshop participants alongside a presentation informing the public of the work they have done globally.
Basurama is a collective dedicated to both cultural investigation and production. Born in the Madrid School of Architecture in 2001, Basurama focuses its research on productive processes with their consequent generation of waste residues and looks to creative possibilities to address this contemporary problem. Our intent is to study inherent phenomena of mass production of real and virtual trash in consumer society and to give a new vision that generates new attitudes and ways of thinking. Basurama researches the cracks found within the generation-consumption process that raise questions not only about how we exploit our resources, but also about how we conceive, work and perceive everyday life.
