Jouant entre la performance, le dessin murale et la sculpture, Walls to the Ball est une installation basée sur un processus évolutif  d'une durée de quatre semaines.  À partir d'une rencontre imaginée entre Anni Albers (tisseuse formée au Bauhaus) and Dirk Nowitzki (joueur étoile du NBA ), Walls to the Ball, réunit le ballon-panier et l'artisanat textile en tête-à-tête en révelant leurs ressemblances et leurs différences. 

Une murale immersive couvrira les murs et le plancher durant le temps de l'exposition avec des bannières et des paniers faits main et transformeront  la galerie en un gymnase/espace de travail idiosynchratique.

Autant proccessus que corpus de travail, le projet revendique le sport et l'artisanat comme une  façon puissante et significative d'aborder la relation nuancée entre genre et valeur. Walls to the Ball contourne l'expression  idiomatique machiste "balls to the wall" en jouant à parts égales entre  l'absurdité, le jeu, et la persistance hardcore. En tant que processus, Walls to the Ball est bordélique, faillible et sujet aux crampes,  mais il a  de l'endurance, de la résistance et il a aussi l’impertinence d’avoir l’ambiance d’une équipe à domicile - cette merde est réelle!

De plus, une émission sportive Ponytail Express, édition Montréal, sera tournée LIVE dans la galerie et s'adressera aux athlètes apathiques.

Hazel Meyer est une artiste et une enthousiaste du sport, résidant à Toronto, Canada. Sa pratique artistique est à la fois socialement engagée et ancrée dans la matérialité.  Elle surmonte ces tendances par  la création d'installations qui deviennent des environnements  performatifs,  des ateliers et des jeux sportifs amateurs. Elle a obtenu un baccalauréat à l'université Concordia (Montréal) et une maitrîse de l'OCAD University (Toronto).  Meyer est actuellement une artiste en résidence dans des écoles secondaires à Toronto, dans le cadre du projet The Pedagogical Impulse.  Récemment, elle a présenté son travail dans les expositions suivantes: Schlaegermusik, avec Annesley Black pour Zukunftsmusik à Stuttgart (Allemagne), Walls to the Ball, pour Struts Gallery à Sackville (Nouveau-Brunswick) et All Hands on the Archive : An Audience of Enablers Cannot Fail, avec Logan McDonald à F.A.G. à Toronto (Ontario). Ses prochains projets sont d'amener  Walls to the Balls à St. John's et à Saskatoon et  What I Talk About When I Talk About Weaving à WARC à Toronto et de terminer un roman graphique intitulé Pattern Slander: A semiautobiographical account of disease, shit and repeat-patterns.

Part performance, mural and sculpture, Walls to the Ball is a process-based installation that will unfold at La Centrale over a four-week period. Starting from an imagined meeting of Anni Albers (Bauhaus trained weaver) and Dirk Nowitzki (NBA MVP), Walls to the Ball pits basketball and textile-based craft in a ‘head-to-head’ about their overlooked similarities.

An immersive wall drawing will span the gallery’s walls and floor, along with handmade banners and nets will transform the space into an idiosyncratic gymnasium/workroom. As much a way of working as it is a body of work, the project champions sport and craft as a potent and meaningful way to engage the nuanced relationship between gender and value. Walls to the Ball circumvents macho idioms like ‘balls to the wall’ with equal parts absurdity, play and hardcore persistence. As a process, Walls to the Ball is messy, fallible and prone to cramps; yet, it has endurance, stamina and a geographically irrelevant home team advantage- that shit is real!

In addition, Ponytail Express (Meyer’s sportscast for the ‘athletically apathetic’) will be taping a Montréal edition live in-gallery.

Hazel Meyer is an artist and sports enthusiast based in Toronto, Canada. Committed to both a socially engaged and material-based practice she negotiates these primarily through creating installations that become environments for performance, workshops and amateur athletics. She has a BFA from Concordia University in Montréal, an MFA from OCAD University in Toronto, and presently is artist-in-residence at Toronto high schools through The Pedagogic Impulse. C'est avec grande fierté que La Centrale Galerie Powerhouse annonce les trois candidates en course pour cette deuxième édition du Prix Powerhouse qui sera remis lors d'une Soirée jeudi le 28 juin, de 19h à 21h30, avec la remise du prix à 19h30.

LE PRIX POWERHOUSE est une bourse de 5000$ remis à une femme* artiste de la région montréalaise ayant atteint ou dépassé le stade de mi-carrière et contribué avec constance et de manière significative au milieu culturel montréalais. Ce prix honore une personne qui a fait preuve de persévérance et qui poursuit son oeuvre en demeurant fidèle à sa vision. 

Notons que dans un premier temps, chaque artiste proposée devait être mise en nomination par un autre personne. Puis, La Centrale a fait appel a un jury extérieur pour faire la pré-sélection des trois finalistes. Ce jury était composé de: Lesley Johnstone (MACM), Anne Ramsden (UQAM), Jerôme Delgado (Le Devoir), Eliane Ellbogen (Eastern Bloc) et Catherine Bodmer ( VIVA!). En concordance avec l'esprit démocratique du centre, la décision finale est remise entre les mains des membres de La Centrale et la récipiendaire sera dévoilée lors de l'événement de remise du Prix.

L'événement ouvert à tous se déroulera vendredi le 28 juin à La Centrale, entre 19h et 21h30, en présence du jury, des membres du centre et des invités. Il mettra à l'honneur le travail des trois finalistes et annoncera la récipiendaire du deuxième PRIX POWERHOUSE.

Avec LE PRIX POWERHOUSE, La Centrale tient à promouvoir le travail d’une artiste montréalaise jusqu'ici sous-représentée, en reconnaissant la force et la singularité d’une pratique artistique influente.

The PRIX POWERHOUSE is a 5000$ award celebrating women* artists who, having reached or passed the mid-stage in their career, continue to contribute in a significant and sustained way to the cultural life of Montréal. The purpose of the prize is to recognize and honour an individual artist of unique vision who pursues their practice with determination and without compromise. 

Each proposed artist was nominated by a third party. Then, La Centrale called upon an external jury to make a shortlist of the 3 finalists. This year's jury was Lesley Johnstone (MACM), Anne Ramsden (UQAM), Jerôme Delgado (Le Devoir), Eliane Ellbogen (Eastern Bloc) and Catherine Bodmer (VIVA!).

In the centre's democratic spirit, the final decision is in the hands of La Centrale's members, whose vote will decide the winning artist. 

This event is open to all and will honor the work of the 3 finalists and announce the second annual PRIX POWERHOUSE winner.

With the PRIX POWERHOUSE, La Centrale wishes to promote the work of a Montréal artist until now under-represented, by recognizing the vibrancy and uniqueness of an influential practice.

La Centrale est également fière de faire la promotion du commerce alternatif avec le retour de son Boom Bazaar. Une dizaine de tables de vente seront envahies par des artistes et artisanes d’ici, proposant une grande variété d’objets de leur crû.

Venez nous voir et profiter du soleil, sous le signe de l’audace et de l’enchantement, tout en soutenant le talent local et participez à la 13e édition de Boom-Chix-A-Boom qui se déroulera pendant la vente trottoir sur la Main, du vendredi 15 au dimanche 17 juin 2012.

En tant que centre d’artiste féministe, La Centrale est fière d’offrir, une fois de plus, une alternative aux activités commerciales du Boulevard Saint-Laurent.
