Art News:

June 7, 2012

This week we discuss shows and events we like: Bushwick Open Studios, Wesley Meuris at Casino Luxembourg, and Donald Judd. We also spend a bit of time yucking it up over this week's openings. There's a bunch tonight, so be sure to check out our recommendations.

This Week’s Openings: Everyone’s a Curator!

We’ve compiled a list of openings happening through Sunday. Summer has started and dOcUMenT(a) is on, which means gallerists are catching up on some Netflix. This week heralds the return of the sexy summer show (bright colors!), big, friendly group shows, and a city-wide test-drive for emerging curators.

Bushwick Open Studios, 2012: Tidings from a New Frontier

What do the results of navigating over 500 Bushwick Open Studios (BOS) look like? We don’t know—we didn’t attempt to see half that many galleries. Still, we were able to produce a few highlights from the work we saw. What we liked, what we sort of liked, and WTF, after the jump.

Bushwick Basel Participants Report: BOS a Success

At 1,500 bucks, Bushwick Basel might have the smallest operating budget of any art fair we’ve been to, but it drew some of the largest crowds at this weekend’s Bushwick Open Studios. Debuting at artist and fair organizer Jules de Balincourt’s Starr Space, the fair attracted 11 galleries from around the neighborhood. It was, by many accounts, a success.

Wesley Meuris: The Form of Captivity

Belgian artist Wesley Meuris is preoccupied with the relationship between the built environment and human behavior, and his solo exhibition R-05.Q-IP.0001, at the Casino Luxembourg through September 2, focuses on the ways in which museums stage encounters with objects. With architectural drawings and diagrams as well as objects and installations, the exhibition examines a range of museum practices, including classifying, archiving, and marketing.

Donald Judd’s New York Home To Open Next Spring

For the second time in its history, the Judd Foundation will open Donald Judd’s New York home and studio to the public. Currently, the five-story SoHo space is undergoing renovations in preparation for a spring 2013 grand opening. That’s less than a year away. It remains unclear what the building will become, and how much of the artist’s personal collection will be on view.

Report from Holy BOS: What Medieval Christians Might Have Done With Projection Technology

I am aware that I sound like I’m describing an acid trip at a Criss Angel performance here, but bear with me.
