A six week course led by artist Lawrence Abu Hamdan designed to critically engage with audio and politics. The course looks at works by artists, theoretical texts, audio technology, music, sound archives, as well as fragments of cinema, policy and legislation to amplify and forensically deconstruct the relationship of listening and audio technology to politics, borders, human rights, testimony and international law.

UPCOMING EXHIBITION
Communal Knowledge: (In)visibilities
Andrea Francke and Annette Krauss

Preview: Tuesday 26 June, 6.30-8.30pm
26 June - 28 July 2012
Wednesday to Saturday, 12-6pm

The Showroom presents two newly commissioned projects that address questions of (in)visibility. Both are produced within Communal Knowledge - an ongoing programme of artists’ commissions that involve collaborative research and knowledge-exchange within the Church Street Neighbourhood.

Andrea Francke’s Invisible spaces of parenthood: A collection of pragmatic propositions for a better future explores issues surrounding childcare in collaboration with local nurseries, child minders, children’s centres and parent groups, creating a space where these can be made visible and discussed, and working to find other models and possibilities. This includes setting up a workshop in The Showroom’s gallery during the exhibition that will be used to test out DIY designs for furniture and play. These will partly be gathered through an open call, and developed with visitors and workshop participants. They will feed into a new manual, to be published in September.

Annette Krauss’ Hidden Curriculum looks at the unintended and unrecognised forms of knowledge that are part of learning processes and daily life within schools. Working with two groups of 15-17 year old students in a series of workshops with local schools, a series of videos have been produced that look at the invisible values and beliefs that accompany official learning processes, and the informal knowledge and normalisation processes that influence the way we know, see and act in the world.
