Hijacked III: Contemporary Photography from Australia & the UK draws on the success and unique energy of Hijacked I (Australia & USA) and Hijacked II (Australia & Germany), both exhibited at ACP, to once again bring together two geographically distant but historically connected communities through a range of diverse photographic practices.

Artists are notorious for their ability to hijack; meaning to stop and hold up, to seize control by use of force in order to divert or appropriate, a deliberate attempt to action a change of direction.

Utilising portraiture, digital collage, archival images, documentary snap shots, internet grabs and refined photographic tableaux, the 25 artists in this exhibition explore themes as diverse as curious weekend leisure pursuits, gender politics and displaced Indigenous culture.

Hijacked III is a Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA) touring exhibition and premiered simultaneously across two sites: PICA in Perth, Western Australia and QUAD Gallery in Derby, United Kingdom, from March to May 2012. A luscious full colour and 420 page Hijacked III compendium, has been published by Big City Press to accompany the exhibition.

This expansive exhibition has been co-curated by Louise Clements (Quad Gallery, Derby), Mark McPherson (Big City Press) and Leigh Robb (PICA).

Artists: Tony Albert, Warwick Baker, Broomberg & Chanarin, Natasha Caruana, Bindi Cole, Maciej Dakowicz, Christopher Day, Melinda Gibson, Toni Greaves, Petrina Hicks, Alin Huma, Seba Kurtis, David Manley, Tracey Moffatt, Trish Morrissey, Laura Pannack, Sarah Pickering, Zhao Renhui, Simon Roberts, Helen Sear, Justin Spiers, Luke Stephenson, Christian Thompson, Tereza Zelenkova, Michael Ziebarth.

ABOUT THE AUSTRALIAN CENTRE FOR PHOTOGRAPHY

The Australian Centre for Photography (ACP) is a national centre of excellence in the exhibition, education and publication of photography. With four decades of experience, it is the longest running contemporary art space in Australia.

Established in 1973, ACP’s exhibitions and publications have played an important role in the development of Australian photography. The ACP has a strong history of supporting emerging artists, with many becoming renowned photographic artists. ACP initiated the first major retrospectives of Max Dupain, Olive Cotton and Merv Bishop, and organised exhibitions early in the careers of Bill Henson, Tracey Moffatt, William Yang and Trent Parke. The ACP has also presented works by many acclaimed international photographers.

The Australian Centre for Photography gratefully acknowledges the generous support of the many organisations and individuals that make its programs possible.
