A 7-inch Retrospective: art,
cowboys, and punk rock Punk rock pioneer Jon Langford
premieres new work at Calgary's original artist-run centre
Calgary - June 15,
2012 - Veteran punk rocker Jon Langford, known for his
ongoing role in The
Mekons (of 1977 vintage, born at an art school in Leeds,
UK), remains a dedicated visual artist and The New Gallery (TNG)
is pleased to present his new mixed-media works throughout June
and July. The exhibition constitutes a retrospective survey of the
fascinating and potent characters that have appeared in
Langford’s work over the past 25 years. Skeletal guitar players, blindfolded
cowboys, and the omnipresent eye of Hank Williams are all here;
the sullied and scratched up depictions of western heroes that
reignited Langford’s studio practice in 1988, and will also
speak poignantly to Calgarians during the centenary of the
Stampede. Langford’s work also includes symbolic reminders of his own
history, growing up in the deeply permeated seafaring culture of
the coast of south east Wales – the stuff of sailor’s nightmares
in the form of giant whales and other monsters of the deep,
which juxtaposes Langford’s own upbringing with the symbols of
cultural history familiar to many Calgarians.
Jon Langford was
born in
Newport, Monmouthshire, and has been based in
Chicago since 1992. He is best known as a founding
member of legendary British rock band the Mekons, who
he continues to perform and record with after
thirty-five years together. He is also a member of Skull Orchard,
Waco Brothers,
and The
Three Johns.jonlangford.de
