Supporting Arts and Culture in Chicago

The MacArthur Foundation will continue its support for more than 200 Chicago-area arts and culture groups for five more years through renewed partnerships with the Prince Charitable Trusts and the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation. MacArthur provides more than $8 million annually in general operating support to theaters, dance groups, music organizations, visual arts programs, film and media groups, museums, zoos and conservatories. All of the organizations MacArthur supports are engaged in some combination of performance, exhibition, community building, and education.

“As public funding for the arts has decreased, MacArthur’s role as a consistent and steady supporter of Chicago arts and culture has become even more critical,” said MacArthur President Robert Gallucci. “We are pleased to continue and increase our role in sustaining the city’s cultural vitality.”

The Power of Educating Girls

In a commentary piece published in the Huffington Post, MacArthur President Robert Gallucci makes the case for investing in girls’ education in developing countries. “Girls with higher levels of education marry later, have smaller families, survive childbirth at higher rates, experience reduced incidences of HIV/AIDS, have children more likely to survive to age five and earn more money. The benefits of education extend beyond individual students to whole societies,” he writes. MacArthur recently launched a new area of grantmaking focused on girls' secondary education in developing countries and committed $10 million to the effort.

Marquette Building to Reduce Energy Use

The MacArthur-owned historic Marquette Building is committing to reduce its energy consumption by 20% over five years, joining a leadership group of 14 buildings to launch the city’s Retrofit Chicago’s Commercial Buildings Initiative. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel and U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced the initiative, which will save more than $5 million in annual energy costs collectively for the participating buildings. Completed in 1895, the Marquette Building, where MacArthur is headquartered, is a Chicago Landmark, a National Historic Landmark, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. MacArthur has restored the building, which houses a free exhibit in the lobby open to the public.
