SHINKOYO is deeply honored to be featured in the current issue of SOUND AMERICAN - the journalistic companion to DRAM, the Database of Recorded American Music.
Mario Diaz de Leon, Doron Sadja, and I (this time the I being Matt Mehlan) sat down with Editor in Cheif Nate Wooley to discuss the formation of Shinkoyo and "non-heirarchical organizational structures" amongst other things..!
In addition to the interview, you'll find a "mixtape" of Shinkoyo musics, including tracks from the most recent Sadja, Diaz de Leon, and Skeletons albums, plus tracks from early releases by Severiano Martinez, Peter B., Zeljko McMullen and a track from the upcoming Skeletons Big Band album "The Bus".

"We at Sound American also think that work being done by the generation that includes the members of Shinkoyo is important to the landscape of modern American composition and hugely underrepresented. A small amount of critical listening can easily come up with connections with and elaborations on such American mavericks as Robert Ashley, Kenneth Gaburo, Arthur Russell, and David Tudor. Beyond the conceptual and experimental quality of their work, the artists from Shinkoyo have found interesting and meaningful ways to fold in pop, rock, noise, funk, and dance music, creating fusion free from the historical connotations of the word."
Nearly all of the Shinkoyo catalog has now been added to DRAM's online music service, which for years has been an amazing resourse for institutions, but now offers individual subscriptions. Definitely worth looking into... and a great organization to support. Another recent addition is Phill Niblock's archive! We are very happy to be included amongst such great music.
