Clean Slate
EXHIBITION: 3 – 29 July
Clean Slate is an exhibition of 36 works by young people aged 13 – 19 from across Avon and Somerset, finalists in an art competition run by Avon and Somerset Police as part of their ongoing youth engagement work. As well as the work of the Clean Slate finalists, a controversial piece thought to be by Andy Warhol will go on show as part of this celebration of young talent and potential.

Exploring The Lion King: From inspiration to realisation
EXHIBITION: 11 July - 16 September

The Royal West of England Academy will host EXPLORING THE LION KING – a unique exhibition which reveals the inspiration and evolution behind Disney’s groundbreaking production of THE LION KING, which begins its much anticipated season at The Bristol Hippodrome on 31st August 2012.

Unnatural-Natural History
EXHIBITION: 14 July – 23 September
37 local and international artists were invited by curators Coates and Scarry to explore the theme of
‘unnatural-natural history’, with diverse and alluring results. A blend of innovative art, creative ideas and lateral thinking, the exhibition will stimulate rigorous discussion as to what can be considered natural.

Chance and Choice II
Peter Ford RE RWA
EXHIBITION: 12 September – 2 October
Extremes of scale typify Peter Ford’s second exhibition under the title Chance and Choice. It includes two spectacular works: Street Language – Things Fall Apart and Head in the Clouds and All at Sea, combining print processes with the artist’s own handmade and recycled paper.

Rose Sanderson (Unnatural-Natural History)
ARTIST IN-SITU: Saturday 14 July 10am – 4pm
Unnatural - Natural History artist Rose Sanderson will be working in-situ in the gallery giving the public a rare glimpse into her working methods and practice. She is inspired by the natural world, especially that which is generally unnoticed or disregarded by others. Her current work focuses predominantly on the fragility of life and representations of freedom.

Scribble and Sketch, Family Drawing Drop-in: Anouk Mercier
SATURDAY 14 JULY, 4 AUGUST AND 1 SEPTEMBER
10.30am – 1pm
Suitable for all ages and abilities Scribble and Sketch offers a morning of fun and informal drawing workshops and exercises, led by Bristol Drawing Club founder and artist Anouk Mercier. Designed to ‘loosen the hand’ this session is ideal for anyone wishing to develop their drawing skills in a lively and relaxed environment, or simply take advantage of trying new materials to get creative. Everyone is welcome. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Free with exhibition entry, book in advance or drop in on the day and join in (space permitting).

A Collector’s Perspective (Unnatural-Natural History)
TALK: An Introduction to Collecting Contemporary and Modern Art, Giles H Brown

In conjunction with the exhibition Unnatural - Natural History this informative talk offers a personal perspective on collecting contemporary and modern art. It aims to provide an introduction to buying work and to demystify and encourage collecting. This will be followed by a question and answer session with Giles and curators Coates and Scarry.

WE CAN PRINT!
Family Summer School
A week of printing taster sessions for children including relief printing, screen printing, printing on fabric and ‘make your own’ print book. Book courses individually or join us for the week and on Friday create a book out of all your efforts. This week long summer school provides an opportunity for children to try their hand at a number of different techniques in a fun and friendly environment.

MONDAY 13 AUGUST 10am – 1pm
Produce multi-coloured linoprints with just one block. Experiment with using different materials as a printing block to build tone and texture. 11+years. £15.

Drypoint: Jo Hounsome
TUESDAY 14 AUGUST 10am – 1pm
Learn how to use the contemporary medium of plastic drypoint – a fantastic, fun and easy way to create beautiful prints. 11+years. £15.

Print with Anything: Maria Bowers
WEDNESDAY 15 AUGUST 10am – 12pm
A fun way to print without a press using everyday household objects and water based washable ink to make prints on paper. Try printing with everything from potatoes to bottle tops and let your imagination run wild. 8-11 years. £10.

Hit and Run Screenprinting: Chitra Merchant
THURSDAY 16 AUGUST 10am – 1pm
Learn how to make exciting multi-coloured screenprints using up to three colour combinations. 11+years. £15.

Make your own Print Book: Gemma Wright
FRIDAY 17 AUGUST 10am – 1pm
Combine a number of prints into one book. Either produce new prints on the day or combine your favourite pieces from the week into one multi-coloured keepsake. 11+years. £15.

FAMILY WORKSHOP: Saturday 18 August 10am – 1pm
Taking inspiration from the exhibition Unnatural - Natural History this family workshop is designed to capture your imagination. Original drawings will be turned into 3D paper mache sculptures, using willow and tissue paper to create your very own weird and wonderful creatures. Just bring an idea and a sense of adventure (and wear messy clothes). All children must be accompanied by an adult. 8 -11 years old. £15 per child.

Pecha Kucha Talk
Saturday 18 August 2pm
Unnatural - Natural History artist Dean Melbourne will be leading an interactive session using the Pecha Kucha format to discuss his relationship to images and recent developments in his work. The format, devised in Japan, draws its name from the Japanese term for the sound of ‘chit chat’ and follows a concise format by presenting 20 images for 20 seconds each, followed by discussion.

Late Summer Baroque: New Bristol Sinfonia at the RWA
CONCERT: Sunday 2 September 7pm
A concert of baroque favourites performed by New Bristol Sinfonia, with guest soloists from the Purcell School of Music. This concert is to raise funds for both the RWA and New Bristol Sinfonia.

Painted Furniture with Farrow & Ball
WORKSHOP: Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 September 10am – 4pm
Be inspired by local artist, and paint effects expert, Vanessa as she teaches you how to create beautiful paint effects using Farrow & Ball unmatched paints. During this 2-day workshop you will practice different paint effects on wood as well as painting your own mini cabinet, supplied by a local carpenter, so you can take your finished piece home to show your friends and family your artwork. £175, includes all furniture, paint and wallpaper. Re-Imaging Wales: Contemporary Art from Wales – 1900 to Present Day
LECTURE: Saturday 22 September 11am – 12.30pm
In Re-Imaging Wales, artist, writer and lecturer Iwan Bala will be challenging pre-conceptions of the contemporary art world in Wales. Bala starts with the influence of Modernism moving through to recent developments. He challenges the twentieth century assumption that Wales has no visual art culture of merit and sets a context for looking at contemporary practice and the institutions that support it. £10 / £8 Friends, booking required.

Spike Print Studio
As part of an on-going collaboration Spike Print Studio and the RWA are bringing you a summer programme of workshops covering a selection of print techniques. Established in 1976, Spike Print Studio is the largest open-access print studio in the South West. Their mission is to provide exceptional resources, inspiration, training and space for artists and the public, and by doing so, advance and educate in printmaking. Our collaborative programme will include a Summer School for families offering fun and informal taster sessions in a variety of techniques as well as more specialised workshops on an ongoing basis.

About the RWA
The RWA has multiple galleries within the 19th century building. The upstairs galleries – Sharples, Winterstoke, Stancomb-Wills, Methuen, and Milner - host the main exhibition/s. A new gallery opened in June 2012 on the basement level, joining the Fedden gallery and taking the RWA exhibition spaces to seven.
 
All gallery spaces are available for private hire for special events, such as weddings and parties, conferences and meetings. If members of the media would like a tour, please contact Lottie as above.

The Royal West of England Academy (RWA) is one of only five Royal academies of art in the UK. It is a registered charity which has been self-supporting for over 150 years and possesses an outstanding Grade II* listed building, galleries and permanent fine art collection. The RWA has HM Queen Elizabeth II as its patron and HRH The Prince of Wales is an honorary academician.
 
The RWA is an established venue for the fine arts and embraces an artistic awareness of the widest nature. The exhibition programme provides a showcase for one-person and mixed exhibitions in a variety of media, which attract large numbers of visitors nationwide. The Academy is situated in the academic heart of Bristol at the Clifton Triangle, where Queens Road meets Whiteladies Road, opposite the Victoria Rooms.
