PERFORMA ANNOUNCES THE THIRD EDITION OF ROSELEE GOLDBERG’S SEMINAL BOOK, PERFORMANCE ART: FROM FUTURISM TO THE PRESENTâ¨
â¨
FIRST PUBLISHED IN 1979, NEW EDITION INCLUDES CHAPTER COVERING PERFORMANCE FROM 2001- 2010
New York, NY, June 27, 2012â¨
Performa is pleased to announce the third edition of Performa Founding Director and Curator RoseLee Goldberg’s seminal book, Performance Art: From Futurism to the Present. First published in 1979 and now extensively updated, this pioneering book has been expanded with a definitive account of the technological, political, and aesthetic shifts in performance art that mark the early years of the twenty-first century. Widely considered to be the official history of performance art, Goldberg’s book has had a direct influence on many of the world’s emerging and established contemporary artists as well as on the development of a new art history that incorporates this important material, and as such it remains the guide for understanding the role of performance within the visual arts and culture today. With performance now featured in major museums and viewed as one of the most important artistic forms of the twenty-first century, this new edition of Performance Art: From Futurism to the Present is a timely update to the essential guide. ⨠â¨
Performance Art: From Futurism to the Present now features a brand new chapter on “Performance in the New Century,” covering contemporary performance of the last decade, from 2001- 2010, including the work of performance artists such as Marina Abramovic, Walid Raad, Francis Alÿs, Maurizio Cattelan, Pierre Huyghe, Tino Sehgal, Sharon Hayes and many more.â¨It covers the astonishing increase in the number of works and venues around the world, and testifies to this art form as the chosen medium for new generations of artists entering the global conversation of art and culture, and for articulating difference, whether dealing with issues of identity or historical context. The desire for direct engagement that many of today’s most prominent artists have helps explain the wide appeal of performance to the ever-broadening audience for new art. Chapter sections include, “Activating the museum,” “Radical action in China,” “Political Allegories,” “Social space,” and “Audience responsibility,” amongst others. The new edition also includes an updated introduction and an expanded reading list.⨠â¨

First published as Performance: Live Art 1909 to the Present in 1979 by Thames & Hudson U.K and Abrams New York, Performance Art: From Futurism to the Present was released by Thames & Hudson and Abrams as a revised and expanded edition in 1988, and has since been published in more than ten languages including Croatian, French, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish. The book is essential reading for every artist in practice today, whether they are working in avant-garde dance, film, music, or any other form of art. Experimental musician and artist Paul Miller, a.k.a. DJ Spooky, has said of Goldberg’s book, “It’s my bible.” Laurie Anderson wrote of her first reading of the book in 1979: “As a young artist in the '70s New York downtown scene, I was pretty sure that we were doing everything for the first time, that we were inventing a new art form… I was completely amazed to find that what we were doing had a rich and complex history.”⨠â¨
Goldberg founded Performa in 2004 with the goal of bringing the material of Performance Art to life, using history as inspiration for re-imagining great works from the past, as well as provoking extraordinary new works for the future. In this tradition, every Performa biennial is based on one or more historical anchors: themes or art movements in twentieth-century art, which inspire the works of some participating artists. For Performa 09 (2009), the historical anchor was Futurism, for Performa 11 (2011), the anchors were Russian Constructivism and Fluxus, and for the forthcoming Performa 13 (2013), the biennial will be anchored by Surrealism. “Performance has been considered as a way of bringing to life the many formal and conceptual ideas on which the making of art is based, and live gestures have constantly been used as a weapon against the conventions of established art,” says Goldberg. With performance now recognized as one of the most important artistic forms of the twenty-first century, and a standard component of the programs of major museums around the world, the book provides the essential road map and background to how we got here.⨠â¨
