MATTRESS FACTORY ANNOUNCES FEMINIST AND…

AN EXHIBITION EXPLORING FEMINISM THROUGH THE VARIED PERSPECTIVES OF SIX FEMALE ARTISTS

PITTSBURGH, PA (July 3, 2012) – Six women artists from diverse backgrounds will create the newest exhibition of installation art at the Mattress Factory.  Feminist and…, curated by Dr. Hilary Robinson, explores feminism through the perspectives of women artists from throughout the world.

The goal of Feminist and… is to present new work by women whose artistic practice shows that feminism is not a single-issue set of politics, and who will demonstrate that it is, in fact, a multi-vocal, multi-generational, and multi-cultural evolution of thinking and practices.

Robinson’s selection of the artists, who are working in residence during summer of 2012, has been intentionally diverse; they represent different generations and hail from North America, Europe, and the Middle East. Some of the artists were practicing during the women’s movement of the 1960s and 70s, while others weren’t born until the heyday of the women’s movement was over.

A public reception celebrating the exhibition’s opening will take place on Friday, September 7, 2012, from 7 – 9 p.m. at the Mattress Factory’s main galleries located at 500 Sampsonia Way. The exhibit will remain on view through May 26, 2013. Admission is $12 and MF Members are always free. For more information, visit http://www.mattress.org.

THE ARTISTS

Julia Cahill is a young artist whose work in performance, video, and installation comments—through exaggeration and satire—on the sexual imagery and exploitation prevalent in media today. She recently received her BFA from Carnegie Mellon University and has exhibited in the Pittsburgh area. http://www.juliacahill.com/.

Betsy Damon founded Keepers of the Waters in 1991 to inspire and promote projects that combine art, science, and community involvement to restore, preserve and remediate watersources. She was an artist activist during the beginnings of the women’s movement, and now describes herself as a conceptual-humanist artist, dedicating her art and life to informing and awakening public consciousness to the need and memory of clean water. http://www.keepersofthewaters.org/.

Parastou Forouhar was born in Teheran, where she studied art at the University of Teheran from 1984 to 1990 and continued her studies at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach am Main, Germany. She has exhibited internationally, including as part of Global Feminisms (2007) at the Brooklyn Museum. In 1998, Forouhar's parents were murdered because of their political beliefs, and many of her works express a critical attitude toward Iranian politics and Islamic Fundamentalism.                                       http://www.parastou-forouhar.de/english/Works/.

Loraine Leeson, PhD, is a visual artist whose community-based projects focus on regeneration of the urban environment, and how it effects both the general quality of life and personal identity.  In 2002, she founded cSpace to explore the Internet as a place for collective creative practice.  A retrospective exhibition celebrating thirty years of her work toured Berlin, London, Toronto, and Dublin between2005-2008. http://www.cspace.org.uk/.

Ayanah Moor’s work addresses contemporary popular culture through an interrogation of gender and racial identity. Recent print, video, and mixed media exhibitions include: Wexner Center for the Arts, Van Brunt Gallery, Wellesley College, Duke University, The Print Center, Columbia College and the Erie Art Museum. Moor holds a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and a MFA from Tyler School of Art/Temple University. She is an Associate Professor of Art at Carnegie Mellon University.  http://ayanah.com/home.html.

Carrie Mae Weems has developed a complex body of art that uses photographs, text, fabric, audio, digital images, installation, and video to investigate family relationships, gender roles, the histories of racism, sexism, class, and various political systems. Her deepexplorations of these issues have been exhibited at major institutions throughout the world. Weems earned a BFA from the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, and a MFA from UC, San Diego, continuing her studies in theGraduate Program in Folklore at UC, Berkeley. http://carriemaeweems.net/
