Los Angeles, June 18, 2012—Art Platform — Los Angeles recently announced its relocation to the Barker Hangar at the Santa Monica Airport for the second edition of its modern and contemporary art fair for Los Angeles. Further realizing the fair's commitment to broadening audiences and contributing to the vibrant Los Angeles art community, Art Platform — Los Angeles has partnered with renowned architecture firm, Frederick Fisher and Partners. Known as a leader of the Los Angeles art and cultural community, Frederick Fisher and Partners specializes in creating environments that resolve the complexities of culture by delivering spaces that heighten the aesthetic experience of the artworks on exhibit.

Underscoring the Art Platform — Los Angeles mission to champion the greater civic- commerce benefits the fair can have on the Los Angeles community, the design concept for the transformation of the Barker Hangar by Frederick Fisher and Partners will embrace the spirit of community by creating spaces that are meant to serve as “points of exchange” for patrons. Each of the new exhibition pavilions, erected north of and adjacent to the Barker Hangar, are designed to reflect its own unique function and ambiance. Working with Frederick Fisher and Partners has enabled Art Platform – Los Angeles to explore the presentation of some of the unique elements that characterize the Southern California lifestyle, such as the incorporation of indoor and outdoor vegetation as well as the embrace of natural light throughout the fair.

In response to the plans for the enhancement of the Barker Hangar principal architect Frederick Fisher says:

We are excited and interested in working with Art Platform — Los Angeles this year at the Barker Hangar as an opportunity to continue our exploration of alternative environments for art. Art fairs are a vital part of the larger ecology of the art world and designing an art fair complements our work with museums, galleries, artist collaborations, exhibitions and art studio design. Our concept is to create a simple, clean environment that is conducive to the variety of galleries and art with an interplay of outdoor and public spaces, lounges, sculpture installation areas and landscape. The entrance pavilion connects the dramatic Barker Hangar space and a parallel new exhibition pavilion to give equal priority and access to all parts of the fair.

In an effort to grow Art Platform — Los Angeles and improve the fair going experience, the decision to relocate to the Barker Hangar also came hand-in-hand with the desire to work with an architecture firm in order to create a unique environment specific to the goals and vision of Art Platform — Los Angeles. Of the decision to partner with Frederick Fisher and Partners, Executive Director of Art Platform — Los Angeles, Adam Gross says:

I have had the pleasure of knowing Fred Fisher for many years. Working with him and his team has been a wonderful experience. Fred’s respect for art and his understanding of building environments that enhance the art they exhibit reinforces his ability to address the unique challenges that an art fair presents and makes him a perfect partner for Art Platform – Los Angeles.

Art Platform - Los Angeles will serve as a platform to encourage and deepen the dialogue between the talent of greater Los Angeles and that of the international art community around the globe.

The historic Barker Hangar at the Santa Monica Airport is known as one of Southern California's premier venues for charity, corporate and private events. The dramatic ceiling vaults to an impressive 43 feet at the center, providing an arched steel truss over a 150- by 234- foot polished cement floor. The 35,000 square foot hangar combined with a total of over 97,000 square feet of additional exterior space, make the Barker Hangar one of the largest and most versatile venues in Los Angeles.

The Barker Hangar, located on the grounds of the main private jet airport for the Westside of Los Angeles, is uniquely situated amongst some of Southern California’s iconic landmarks such as the Santa Monica Pier, Third Street Promenade and Pacific Coast Highway. The Westside location is not only in proximity to major Los Angeles museums such as Santa Monica Museum of Art, The Getty, Hammer Museum, and Los Angeles County Museum of Art but to significant private collections as well.
