16 June - 11 August Mezzanine Gallery Exhibition KANAVAL Vodou, Politics and Revolution on the streets of Haiti The photographs in this exhibition document the pre-Lenten Mardi Gras festivities in Jacmel, a coastal town in Southern Haiti. Leah's photographs register Haiti’s juncture between its history, its cosmology and the present. Gordon’s images document troupes of ‘performers’ acting out mythological and political tales in a whorish theatre of the absurd that course the streets unshackled by traditional parade. The traces of previous texts and drawings often remain visible through the layers of mark-making, thus reflecting the history of the documents earlier forms. In this new collection of work, Nottingham based artist Gurminder Sikand uses the concept of the palimpsest to explore the shifting nature of culture, memory and identity.
