HAVE A WONDERFUL
4th OF JULY!

July 12-October 14, 2012
BACKSTITCH
A 25-Year Retrospective of Advances
& Milestones in Quiltmaking
INNOCENCE by Hollis Chatelain
INNOCENCE by Hollis Chatelain

An exhibition opening July 12, 2012 examines the breadth and depth of changes that have overtaken this traditional American art form in the past quarter century. Backstitch: A 25-Year Retrospective of Advances & Milestones in Quiltmaking draws works from twenty-five critically acclaimed artists from across the country who work in styles from the traditional to the very avant garde.

Showcased are techniques including embellishment, fabric dyeing, fusing, photo transfer, thread painting and more. Also represented: commemorative quilts, historic reproduction quilts, and quilts for a cause.

The Backstitch exhibition has been planned to mark the 25th anniversary of the New England Quilt Museum, the only museum in the northeast devoted exclusively to the study and promotion of the art and craft in all its forms. From a gleam in the eye of a few local dreamers, the museum, housed in a renovated 19th century bank building, has become a landmark in the heart of America’s historic textile producing region. The exhibition highlights the evolution of the art form, which parallels the growing importance of the museum as a New England fiber arts destination.

Opening reception: Saturday, July 14 [1-3PM] featuring a gallery talk by co-curator Laura Lane. Opening reception sponsored by the Cocheco Quilters Guild.

This exhibition is curated by Anita Loscalzo and Laura Lane, and sponsored by the Quilter's Guild of Dallas and Janome.

OUR TALENTED VOLUNTEERS

The New England Quilt Museum could hardly fulfill its mission were it not for the dedication of our hard-working volunteers. They are, almost without exception, talented quilters in their own right, which makes us even more grateful that they make time in their very busy schedules to help the museum carry out its programs.

The extraordinary work of two longtime volunteers is on view this summer in New York City and at the Mancuso Quilt Show in New Hampshire.

Volunteer and former NEQM board member Sylvia Einstein is featured in a one-woman show at the ArtQuilt Gallery-NYC. Her Let Fabric Speak exhibiton runs from July 10-August 25. Sylvia will be appearing there in person on Monday, July 9, from 6 to 7:30 pm. Sylvia considers her work to be modern versions of traditional quilts. She works extensively with grids and blocks but often breaks seam lines visually, resulting in unexpected lines and patterns.

Also, a quilt by volunteer Martha McCarthy will be featured in a special exhibit at the World Quilt Show - New England X [August 16-19, Manchester, NH]. "Like a regiment of soldiers standing at attention": that is how Seaway Trail Project Manager Lynette Lundy-Beck describes the new Great Lakes Seaway Trail War of 1812 Bicentennial and Quilt Traveling Exhibit of quilts and interpretive panels. Twenty-five of the finest newly-made examples of 1812-period quilts--including one by Martha--are accompanied by four Great Lakes Seaway Trail "Storyteller" interpretive panels that tell stories of the war; fabric weaving technology in 1812; the daily lives of militia, soldiers and sailors; and the impact of the conflict on the daily lives of those left at home.

Congratulations to Sylvia and Martha!

YOUR DONATION DOLLARS AT WORK
The repointing of the brickwork on the rear of our building is the final project paid for by the funds from the Massachusetts Cultural Council/ MassDevelopment Cultural Facilities grant we received and for which our loyal donors came up with the matching $77,000 (actually over $80,000!) in 2010. The work has been spread out over 18 months and has included new boilers, new fire safety upgrades, new HVAC upgrades and other deferred maintenance on our 1845 historic building.

Thank you to everyone who made this matching grant a success. Your generosity is helping preserve this wonderful museum for another generation of quilt lovers!
Closes July 8, 2012
FENWAY PARK CENTENNIAL
Fenway Park Centennial by Rosemary Bawn
Fenway Park Centennial by Rosemary Bawn

Just in time for the 100th Anniversary of Fenway Park comes a quiltmakers' celebration of an American landmark. Astonishing art quilts capture all the excitement of both the ball park and the Red Sox.

For more than two decades, Rosemary Bawn has been turning out stunning art quilts celebrating her beloved team and their home park. From I Remember the $1.00 Bleachers to Reverse the Curse!, these fabulous quilts by Bawn and other quilters will leave you smiling and recalling your own Red Sox memories.

There are only a few days left to see these fabulous quilts. Bring every baseball fan you know. They'll never look at quilts the same way again!

2 NEW RAFFLES!

Two wonderful items are now up for raffle to support the programs and mission of the New England Quilt Museum.

December 14, 2012 is the drawing date for a Janome Memory Craft 6600P sewing machine. Also included is a rolling tote, for a total value of $2,599. This fabulous machine was generously donated by Red Barn Sewing & Yarn Center [Merrimack, MA], longtime supporters of the museum. Tickets: $5.

On May 2, 2013, we'll be drawing the name of the lucky winner of a beautiful Aunt Grace Circle of Friends quilt. This 80"x80" quilt, designed by Judie Rothermel and Vicki Bellino, was machine pieced, hand appliqued and quilted by Shirley Bangma from a pattern and fabric donated by Helane Huntington [both of Uxbridge, MA]. We are so thankful for their support! Tickets: $1 ea./6 for $5.

For more information on these raffles, visit our website, drop by the museum, or call 978-452-4207 ext.16.
