BACKSTITCH
A 25-Year Retrospective of Advances
& Milestones in Quiltmaking

Join us on Saturday, July 14th at 1pm for the official Opening Reception for this glorious exhibition of quilting's progress over the past 25 years.

Co-curated by Anita Loscalzo and Laura Lane, BACKSTITCH features a group of artists that reads like a Who's Who of leading quilt artists. The opening reception features a gallery talk by Laura Lane.

Showcased are techniques including embellishment, fabric dyeing, fusing, photo transfer, thread painting and more. Also represented: commemorative quilts, historic reproduction quilts, and quilts for a cause.

Sponsored by the Quilter's Guild of Dallas and Janome. Opening Reception sponsored by Cocheco Quilters Guild.

DON'T MISS THE CHANCE TO
SEE A QUILT LEGEND!
Mary & Marianne Fons
Mary & Marianne Fons

Marianne Fons, founder of the Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting magazine and television show, is making two rare appearances at next month's Lowell Quilt Festival.

Marianne will be appearing in an August 9th evening lecture and slide show along with her daughter Mary Fons, current co-host of the LOQ television show and founder of Hey Quilty, a magazine and website aimed at newer quilters. On Friday, August 10th, the Fons ladies will also appear at a brunch and blue-ribbon panel discussion moderated by the museum's own curator Pam Weeks.

Seating at these events is limited. Don't miss your chance to meet a true legend of the quilt world! For more information, visit the Lowell Quilt Festival website, where you can download a registration form or sign up securely online.

Sponsored by the Jane Mackiewicz Downes Speaker Series, Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation, and the Lowell Sun.

Sunday, July 15: 2pm
DICKENS' ATLANTIC CROSSING
Christie Jackson
Christie Jackson

Charles Dickens visited America (including Lowell) in 1842. Though he loved the country, he hated the Atlantic crossing, despite traveling on what was considered luxury transport in its day.

Join us on Sunday, July 15th at 2pm for a FREE lecture by steamship historian Christie Jackson. Jackson will examine what transatlantic travel was like in the mid-19th century and how Dickens was part a a burgeoning international tourist industry. This lecture is part of Dickens in Lowell, a 7-month series of events celebrating the author's visit to America, which coincides with a worldwide bicentenary celebration of his birth.

Got Extra Quilt Blocks?
HELP US WITH A
GUERILLA QUILT EVENT

How is it that every quilt project seems to result in a few leftover blocks? Ever wondered what to do with yours? Museum Store manager Leanne Tremblay can use some of your leftover blocks for a little guerilla PR fun she has in mind in the lead-up to next month's Lowell Quilt Festival.

Send or deliver your blocks to the museum, marked for Leanne's attention. Want to help her with this fun (and secret) activity? Give her a call at 978-452-4207 ext. 16 or email shop@nequiltmuseum.org.

2 New Workshops in September
APPLIQUE LANDSCAPES &
SHIBORI DYEING

We're in the heat of summer now, but fall will be here before we know it. Like the students we once were, most of us still get the urge to take a class when fall nips the air. That's why we're delighted to annouce that two fabulous New England quilt artists will be teaching workshops at the museum in September.

On Saturday, September 15, artist Jo Diggs will be teaching a half-day class on Applique Landscapes. Jo's stunning pieces have been exhibited nationally and internationally to wide acclaim. Workshop fee: $25 members/$30 non-members.

On Saturday, September 29, join renowned artist Carol Anne Grotrian for a full-day workshop on shibori dyeing: An Introduction to Indigo. Carol Anne's work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and has been acquired by a number of major collectors. Workshop fee: $55 members/$65 non-members.

For more information on both of these workshops, visit the museum website. You can register in person, by mail, or securely online.

July 27-29
LOWELL FOLK FESTIVAL
The whole city of Lowell will be hopping July 27-29 during the annual Lowell Folk Festival. On Saturday and Sunday of that weekend, the museum will offer a FREE kids' activity as part of the fun. Bring your family to Lowell to enjoy music, food and crafts!
DONATION HONORS FOUNDING MOTHER
The museum is grateful for a recent donation of two quilt racks that belonged to one of our founding mothers. Laurie Seluk was going through her mom Margaret Seluk's effects when she came across these lovely racks. They're now being put to good use displaying some of the many handmade quilts available for sale in the Museum Store.
2 NEW RAFFLES!

Two wonderful items are now up for raffle to support the programs and mission of the New England Quilt Museum.

December 14, 2012 is the drawing date for a Janome Memory Craft 6600P sewing machine. Also included is a rolling tote, for a total value of $2,599. This fabulous machine was generously donated by Red Barn Sewing & Yarn Center [Merrimack, MA], longtime supporters of the museum. Tickets: $5.

On May 2, 2013, we'll be drawing the name of the lucky winner of a beautiful Aunt Grace Circle of Friends quilt. This 80"x80" quilt, designed by Judie Rothermel and Vicki Bellino, was machine pieced, hand appliqued and quilted by Shirley Bangma from a pattern and fabric donated by Helane Huntington [both of Uxbridge, MA]. We are so thankful for their support! Tickets: $1 ea./6 for $5.

For more information on these raffles, visit our website, drop by the museum, or call 978-452-4207 ext.16.
