|
2300+ Umm...so...normally we'd brag about setting, actually destroying, our previous entry record by more than 200 submissions...and, yes, it's appreciated. The OIAF continues to earn the respect of the animation world. That's a nice pat on our back. But, that means more work. That means stronger alcohol, loaded dice and more payoffs. Oh, that's not so bad I guess. Where was I? Yes...we are now nearing the end of selections and will have some announcements to make before the month is over. I can tell you though you better be ready for some of the weirdest, funniest, freakiest and mind-blowing films. No depressing ones though. We don't do that anymore. Our selection committee was made up of Canadian Film Institute Executive Director Tom McSorley, special guest Hélène Tanguay, OIAF Technical Coordinator Keltie Duncan and OIAF Artistic Director Chris Robinson. The announcements are coming soon.
On top of these super fantastic Competition screenings, you've also got to look forward to a pretty damn good line-up of special screenings and retrospectives. We are adding more and more stuff everyday and we haven't even announced our Special Presentation guests yet! You'd better book your hotel and buy your pass now, you lucky people.
|
|
And kids, if that's not enough to blow your minds...here's another reason to haul your rumps to the OIAF this year...we've just added a special retrospective honouring the amazing UK animator, Run Wrake. Watching a Run Wrake animation is like being tapped into the unconscious mind of some extremely high, musical genius. We'll be showing the classics like Jukebox, Music for Babies, Rabbit and Control Master along with a bevy of commercials, music videos and even his beautiful visuals for U2 tours (rumour has it that one beautiful day, Bono was so moved by Run's work that he had to take his shades off to wipe away his tears of ecstasy).
Run is just one Brit invading the OIAF this year. Don't forget our tributes to Barry Purves (who is also doing a special masterclass on his latest film, Tchaikovsky) and the animation mad men, Smith and Foulkes, whose innovative ads would make Don Draper drink more.

Vanarts
Vancouver Institute of Media Arts (VanArts) is one of the world's most well established and highly respected visual, media and performing arts schools. VanArts has over 16 years of experience in launching graduates' careers for the animation, games and visual effects industries both locally and worldwide, as well as careers in photography, acting, broadcasting and web development. With the help of our specialized instruction, small class sizes, industry-experienced faculty and connections to the booming industry in Vancouver, VanArts graduates have gone on to work for major studios such as Disney, Dreamworks, and Electronic Arts, in addition to smaller studios and even starting their own companies. A recent survey of the "Top 100 Schools for Animation, Gaming and Design" by Animation Career Review ranked VanArts as #1 in Western Canada and #11 worldwide. |

Bridgehead
Working for communities at home and abroad.
Bridgehead’s coffeehouses are nestled in most of Ottawa’s downtown neighbourhoods. They are a place to relax, socialize, and of course get highly caffeinated on excellent coffee. By offering fairly traded and organic coffees and teas we aim to promote healthy and sustainable grower communities. By donating these products to support the many volunteers, programs and festivals around Ottawa we aim to support our own communities as well.

SAW Gallery
From its inception in 1973, the artist-run centre Galerie SAW Gallery has supported politically and socially engaged art, focusing on the performance and media arts. Many of the world's best-known artists have exhibited at SAW in the early stages of their careers. Begun by a group of local artists, the gallery was originally part of the legendary café Le Hibou on Sussex Drive, hence the name SAW, an acronym for Sussex Annex Works. In 1981, the centre founded the SAW Video cooperative to support independent video artists and documentarists. During this time, the centre also initiated Club SAW, which has become the most important multidisciplinary space in the region. In 1989, Galerie SAW Gallery, SAW Video (now a separate entity) and Club SAW moved into the historic Arts Court building. With over 30,000 visitors each year, Galerie SAW Gallery is a prime destination for contemporary art in the Ottawa-Gatineau region. |
