Thursdays igNITE at Tacoma Art Museum
Museum now open until 8 pm every Thursday
Tacoma, WA - Tacoma Art Museum has caught fire with creativity. Every Thursday the museum will be open until 8 pm for Thursday igNITE. From 5-8 pm admission to the museum will be by donation thanks to support from Columbia Bank, who has been a sponsor of the museum since 2004. Thursday igNITE will include special workshops and events throughout the year for guests to catch their own spark. Each event coincides with current exhibitions.
Listed below is a schedule of Thursday igNITE events through mid-October. Events are added frequently, click here for the latest information and to register for any of the igNITE programs.
PROGRAMS
Chalk-In on Tollefson Plaza
Third Thursday Artwalk, July 19, 3 pm
Bring your chalking gloves and join Tacoma Art Museum and Native Quest to help fill in a gigantic chalk design on Tollefson Plaza. Alongside Shaun Peterson’s Welcome Figure, this community work of art will serve as a greeting to the thousands of people from near and far converging on Owen Beach for the annual Coast Salish Canoe Journey paddle-in, hosted by the Puyallup Tribe on July 25. Free for Third Thursday Artwalk.
Wine ‘n’ Watercolor
Thursday igNITE, July 26, 5:30 pm
Create your best Northwest landscape while sipping wine and enjoying the company of friends old and new on Tacoma Art Museum’s balcony. Led by a local watercolor artist, get inspired by engaging conversation, stunning views of Mount Rainier and downtown Tacoma, and works on view in the museum’s galleries. Cost: $45 ($35 for members) includes all supplies, hors d’oeuvres, and a flight of wine. Purchase tickets here.
Best Dancing in the Northwest
Third Thursday Artwalk, August 16, 5 pm
Come to Tacoma Art Museum to enjoy performances by some great local youth dancers. While you’re here, create a badge to add to our collaborative community art piece in honor of the exhibition Marie Watt: Lodge. Free for Third Thursday Artwalk.
Sip ‘n’ Sew
Thursday igNITE, August 23, 5:30 pm
Inspired by the work of Marie Watt, make your own felt wine bag and learn about textile craft while enjoying good company and festive food and drink. Cost: $45 ($35 for members) includes all supplies, hors d’oeuvres, and a flight of wine. Purchase tickets here.
Baubles ‘n’ Bubbly
Thursday igNITE, September 13, 5:30 pm
Looking for a unique, wearable, personally meaningful accessory? Create your own found-object jewelry art in the style of Marina Marioni while sipping and munching on delicious, inspiring refreshments. Cost: $45 ($35 for members) includes all supplies, hors d’oeuvres, and a flight of champagne. Participants are encouraged to bring their own found objects to incorporate into their piece. Know More Art Lecture Series: Northwest Art, Northwest Influences
Thursday igNITE, September 20-October 11, 6 pm
Hear directly from four prominent artists, all featured in Best of the Northwest: Selected Paintings from the Collection (on view through March 23), as they share stories and insights about their own work and their relationships to other Northwest artists. Cost: $50 for complete series ($35 for members), $15 per individual lecture ($10 for members, $5 for students). Educator clock hours available. Preregistration is recommended.
Ale ‘n’ Altars
Thursday igNITE, October 25, 5:30 pm
Learn about the history and culture around Día de los Muertos as celebrated in Oaxaca, Mexico, and come home with your own personalized skeleton figurine, or calaca, honoring a beloved family member or pet. Toast the cycle of life and death with jovial libations at this fun and festive workshop. Cost: $45 ($35 for members) includes all supplies, light Mexican fare, and a beer sampler.

ADMISSION – Adult $10, Student/Military/Senior (65+) $8, Family $25 (2 adults and up to 4 children under 18). Children 5 and under free. Third Thursdays free from 5-8 pm. Members always free.
