Maria Vlanti, sculpture & Nikos Vlachos, painting
MedusaArt Gallery @ Franca Scala & @ Fotis Art Café
8 June 2012 – 30 May 2013
After nine years of exhibitions and installations on the premises of Fotis Mellios in Naoussa, Paros, this year I was happy to accept a proposition by Moschoula and Frangiskos and their restaurant, Franca Scala, in Parikia.
We'll be expecting you at the Franca Scala to enjoy the works created by Maria Vlanti and Nikos Vlachos for one of the most beautiful neoclassical houses in Parikia, admire the view of the Old Town from above and try the restaurant's dishes.
Nikos Vlachos has created some site-specific works for Fotis café in Naoussa and we'll be happy to see you there for a drink!
Maria Vlandi devises, moulds and creates on a large scale her monolithic clay formations which stand vertically in the exhibition space and complement one another. While abstract in their form, her works still succeed in taking viewers into recognisable, familiar worlds.
Nikos Vlachos applies paint in thick layers and then makes cuts in it to produce paradoxical images of an existential style, whether they depict humans or animals. The common thread in these works is the outlined figures and the absence of perspective due to the almost invariably off-white backdrop. The carved-like lines lay the painter's heroes bare without idealising them
