John

'Pyramid'
September 6 to September 31
The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to present 'Pyramid', an exhibition of new works by John
Fitzsimons.
Exciting and obscure re-interpretations and
re-evaluations of ancient civilizations and their megalithic structures
–Egyptians, Mayans, pyramids, Stonehenge- inform his new series of
work.
Artist's statement:
"Egyptologist, Dr. Carmen Boulter’s, research intrigued
me the most. She talks about the pyramids as ‘sophisticated harmonic structures
that mirror the stars but are also designed to replicate harmonic clarities of
the human body.” She talks of a ‘golden age’ in Ancient Egyptian society based
on equality, balance and peace. She proposes that the Egyptians would have
viewed society today as a "dark age". I found this fascinating. My paintings
began as an homage to these societies. I wanted to achieve this harmony and
clarity in my own work and I took their megalithic sites and structures as my
visual cue. As I worked, I found myself contemplating more and more about
society today. During the process the dialogue shifted from one with the past to
one with the present -looking back but moving forward- in the end these
paintings are about hope, aspirations and possibilities."
