Peter Ford: Chance and Choice II

Extremes of scale typify Peter Ford’s second exhibition at the RWA under the title Chance and Choice. It includes two spectacular works which contrast earthy and more spiritual modes. ‘Street Language - Things Fall Apart’ and ‘Head in Clouds and All at Sea’ both demonstrate the impulses which provide the title for the exhibition. They each combine unusual print processes with the artist’s handmade and recycled paper.
Also on display will be recent improvised paintings in ink and watercolour on Asian paper and miniature etchings and bookplate designs, providing a contrast in scale and demonstrating the artist’s exceptional versatility.
In answer to the question ‘What is your work about?’ Peter Ford says he is motivated by the wish to use materials to discover new images which do not constrict his use of colour. ‘Head in the Clouds and All at Sea’ demonstrates in size and form a preoccupation with distance and communication across a great space. Generally his work is evocative rather than descriptive though his capacities as an illustrator and figurative artist still find expression in miniature etchings and commissioned book- plate designs.
Examples of Peter Ford’s prints, artists’ books and paperworks are represented in nineteen public collections including Tate Britain, The Victoria and Albert Museum,
Bibliothèque Nationale Paris, Warsaw Academy of Fine Art, The Pushkin Museum, Moscow and the Taiwan National Museum of Fine Art.
Peter Ford is probably better known in art circles outside Britain. In past years he has been involved in selecting exhibitions in Russia, Serbia, Ukraine and most recently in Krakow, Poland. Currently he has invitations to work in Michigan, USA and he has an opportunity to return to Shenzhen, South China where he had a successful residency in 2009.

The Royal West of England Academy (RWA) is one of only five Royal academies of art in the UK. It is a registered charity which has been self-supporting for over 150 years and possesses an outstanding Grade II* listed building, galleries and permanent fine art collection. The RWA has HM Queen Elizabeth II as its patron and HRH The Prince of Wales is an honorary academician.
The RWA is an established venue for the fine arts and embraces an artistic awareness of the widest nature. The exhibition programme provides a showcase for one-person and mixed exhibitions in a variety of media, which attract large numbers of visitors nationwide.
The Academy is situated in the academic heart of Bristol at the Clifton Triangle, where Queens Road meets Whiteladies Road, opposite the Victoria Rooms.
