Join us for a media tour of Shadow Sites: Recent Work by Jananne Al-Ani (August 25, 2012-February 10, 2013), with Carol Huh, assistant curator for Contemporary Asian art at the Freer|Sackler, and exhibition artist Jananne Al-Ani, winner of the prestigious Abraaj Capital Art Prize 2011, the world's only art prize to focus on the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia.
Drawing on archival archaeological and aerial photographs, as well as contemporary media, Al-Ani has created a new body of video works that examines enduring representations of the Middle Eastern landscape.
The exhibition marks the U.S. debut of Al-Ani's recent works and includes two video installations, Shadow Sites II (2011) and The Guide and Flock (2008), along with a selection of rare images of Iran and Iraq from the Freer|Sackler's archives that inspired the work. The exhibition is a highlight of the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery's 25th anniversary celebration in 2012.
Light refreshments will be served.
RSVP by Tuesday, August 21, to Amanda M. Williams at pressasia@si.edu or 202.633.0271.
