THE MEXICAN SUITCASE
The first photojournalists Robert Capa, Gerda Taro, and David Seymour captured those vital moments that made up the history of the Spanish Civil War. Photographers documenting war from the front lines, these volunteers risked their lives to share what was really going on with the world. Before being seen, the negatives traveled alongside Spanish exiles to Mexico, remaining hidden for almost 70 years.
The story of that suitcase is brought to life here through a combination of archive footage, present day interviews, and the pictures themselves. Capa's work was extraordinary, inventing perspectives never before seen, and conveying for the first time the horror of military attacks on civilians. But he didn't work alone. This film also serves to highlight the work of Gerda Taro, his personal and professional partner, and of David 'Chim' Seymour. It shows the importance of their teamwork both for the photography itself and as a source of courage in facing the risks involved. - Jennie Kermode

Les premiers photojournalistes Robert Capa, Gerda Taro et David Seymour ont capturé les moments cruciaux qui ont façonné lhistoire de la Guerre civile dEspagne. En documentant la guerre au front, ces volontaires ont risqué leur vie pour partager au monde les faits réels. Avant dêtre vus, les négatifs ont voyagé aux cotés dexilés espagnols en direction du Mexique, restant cachés près de 70 ans.
Lhistoire de cette valise est ravivée à travers un rassemblement denregistrements, dentrevues récentes et des photographies dorigine. Le travail de Capa est extraordinaire, concevant des perspectives jamais vues auparavant, retraçant pour la première fois lhorreur des attaques militaires sur les civils. Mais Robert Capa ne travaillait pas seul. Ce film permet aussi de découvrir le travail de Gerda Taro, sa compagne de vie et de carrière ainsi que celui de David «Chim» Seymour.
La valise mexicaine montre limportance de leur travail déquipe non seulement en photographie, mais aussi comme source de courage face aux risques impliqués. Jennie Kermode
