Dans ses dessins et ses installations, Sam Kinsley élabore des systèmes 
d'inscription graphique afin de représenter les nombres qui sont 
utilisés --- par l'état, les banques, les institutions civiles, etc. --- 
pour l'identifier ou la décrire. Ces systèmes, qui régissent la 
répétition d'actions simples sur une longue période de temps, lui 
permettent de comprendre le pouvoir et l'autorité symboliques de ces 
nombres en traduisant la place qu'ils prennent dans sa vie en espace 
occupé sur une feuille ou encore dans une pièce. S'assignant ainsi une 
tâche précise souscrivant à un temps donné, Sam Kinsley se conforme à 
une pratique du dessin laborieuse par laquelle les marques s'accumulent 
pour créer des formes abstraites jouant sur la densité de ces éléments 
et rappelant certains motifs organiques ou cartographiques.


À articule, Sam Kinsley présente /Masse/, un gigantesque dessin fait à 
l'épingle. Pour ce projet, l'artiste a perforé le papier autant de fois 
que sa dette financière compte de cent. Le mouvement du papier sous 
l'action de l'épingle, la multiplication des interventions et le vide se 
combinent pour créer une texture prenant la forme d'une vaste masse. Le 
dessin se déroulera en cascade pour occuper l'ensemble de la galerie. 
Avec /Masse/, Sam Kinsley poursuit sa série d'autoportraits alternatifs 
où chaque représentation explore le caractère numéral de son identité 
sociale.

*Sam Kinsley*est une artiste résidant à Halifax qui travaille avec 
l'installation. Elle a complété son baccalauréat en beaux-arts à la Nova 
Scotia College of Art and Designen 2010 et son travail a été présenté 
dans le cadre d'expositions sur les côtes est et ouest du Canada. Sam 
Kinsely collabore présentement avec une autre artiste d'Halifax, Daina 
Tavenier, sur /The General /: une installation itinérante qui crée des 
lieux publiques dans des espaces privés.

In her drawings and installations, Sam Kinsley creates systems of 
inscription to represent the numbers that are used---by the state, by 
banks, by civic institutions, and so on---to identify or describe her. 
These systems, which govern the repetition of simple actions over a long 
period of time, allow her to understand the symbolic power and authority 
that the numbers possess, as she transfers them from the place they 
usually occupy in her life to the space on a page or even in a 
room.Kinsley assigns herself a precise task to be carried out in a given 
time period---a laborious drawing process during which the marks she 
makes accumulate to create abstract forms of varying density that recall 
organic or cartographic motifs.

At articule, Kinsley will fill the entire gallery space with//a huge, 
cascading drawing made with a pin, entitled /Mass/. In this work, she 
has made as many perforations in paper as there are cents in her 
personal debt; her multiple interventions, the movement of the paper 
under the pin, and the empty space combine to create a vast, textured 
mass. /Mass/ is the latest in a series of alternative self-portraits, 
each of which explores the numerical character of Kinsley's social 
identity.

*Sam Kinsley* is a installation artist currently based out of Halifax.  
She received her Fine Arts Degree  from Nova Scotia College of Art and 
Design, in 2010, and has participated in exhibitions on both the East 
and West coast of Canada. Sam Kinsley is presently collaborating with 
fellow Halifax artist Daina Tavenier on the General - a roaming 
installation creating public places in private spaces.

*Joshua Schwebel (Montréal)*

articule est fier de présenter les oeuvres de Micah Lexier. Micah Lexier 
est né à Winnipeg, au Manitoba, en 1960. Il a obtenu un baccalauréat en 
beaux-arts de l'Université du Manitoba (1982) et une maîtrise en 
beaux-arts à la Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (1984). Ses 
oeuvres publiques grand format ont été présentées au Agnes Etherington 
Art Centre (Kingston, Ontario) ainsi qu'au Metro Hall, au Air Canada 
Centre et à la station de métro Sheppard/Leslie (Toronto, Ontario). Son 
exposition de 2005, intitulée David Now & Then (un regard rétrospectif 
sur l'exposition A Portrait of David, réalisée dix ans plus tôt), a 
voyagé de Winnipeg à New York et jusqu'en Écosse. Le travail de Lexier 
fait partie de collections publiques et corporatives à travers le 
Canada, dont celle du Musée des beaux-arts du Canada (Ottawa) et de la 
Banque d'oeuvres d'art du Conseil des arts du Canada (Ottawa). Ses 
oeuvres se retrouvent également dans des collections aux États-Unis et 
en Australie : Belagio Hotel (Las Vegas), Saks Fifth Avenue (New York) 
et le Museum of Contemporary Art (Sydney). Micah Lexier vit et travaille 
entre Toronto et New York.

articule is proud to present the work of Micah Lexier. Micah Lexier was 
born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1960. He obtained a BFA at the University 
of Manitoba (1982) and an MFA at the Nova Scotia College of Art and 
Design (1984). His large-scale public art projects include an 
installation at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre in Kingston, Ontario, 
and installations at Metro Hall, the Air Canada Centre, and the 
Sheppard/Leslie subway station in Toronto, Ontario. Lexier's 2005 
exhibition David Now & Then - a revisiting of the exhibition A Portrait 
of David from ten years earlier -- traveled from Winnipeg to New York 
and as far as Scotland.? ?Lexier's work is included in public and 
corporate collections across Canada, including the National Gallery of 
Canada (Ottawa), and the Canada Council Art Bank (Ottawa). He also has 
work in the collections of the Belagio Hotel (Las Vegas, USA), Saks 
Fifth Avenue (New York), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Sydney, 
Australia) in the United States, and in Australia. He is represented by 
Trepanier Baer Gallery (Calgary), Robert Birch Gallery (Toronto), Jack 
Shainman Gallery (New York), and Gitte Weise Gallery (Sydney, 
Australia).? ?Micah Lexier now lives and works in Toronto and New York.
