New York, NY - A native of County Meath, Ireland, Michael Brunnock possesses an extraordinary and distinctive voice, and his songs mine the profound. So it's not surprising that David Byrne cast him to sing the role of an Irish musician on the brink of success whose voice guides Sean Penn through an emotional journey of self-discovery in the upcoming film, "This Must Be the Place" (US Release November 2012). Brunnock sang six songs on the soundtrack and won for Best Original Song, "If It Falls, It Falls", at this year's David di Donatello (Italian Oscars®). The score was produced by Byrne with lyrics by Will Oldham (Bonnie Prince Billy). Other artists appearing on the soundtrack include Iggy Pop, Jónsi & Alex and more.
Brunnock's talent is also deeply evident on his new critically acclaimed 13-track record, THE ORCHARD (Araglin Records). Mixed by triple Grammy award winner Patrick Dillett, the album is a collection of gorgeously crafted songs that embrace a breadth of vision. Featuring guest performances from Glen Hansard (Swell Season), Julia Stone, Ari Hest and Joe Sumner, the album is Brunnock's third release since Live in New York (2009) - a tribute to blues legend Moe Holmes - and So I Do (2007). The opening track, "Circle", sets the tone for the entire album where luscious harmonies lift the melody. Other tracks like "Sensation" and "Down by the Araglin" highlight Brunnock's skillful use of traditional Irish instrumentation. Hints of country and folk can also be heard within the introduction of the whimsical song "Wine", which combines banjos, mandolins, and harmonium.
For those who have watched the Irish music scene, Michael Brunnock is recognized as a soulful artist who's made a big impact. He rose through the burgeoning ranks, with bands like Little Palace and The Van Winkles. Since moving to New York in late 2000, Michael has been a steady presence in the independent music scene. He has toured extensively in the US, opening for the Frames and The Swell Season. On recent sold out American tours he has shared a stage with many big names, including Foy Vance, Paddy Casey, Mundy, STAND, The Saw Doctors, Declan O' Rourke, and Ari Hest, to name a few. His talent holds its own with any caliber of musicians and he knows how to get the best out of his playing experience with other artists.
His hypnotic vocals, mixed with exquisitely and expertly arranged melodies have drawn artist comparisons to Damien Rice and Neil Young, among others. Michael's clever display of folk-rock in THE ORCHARD is surely poised to give him the recognition he has long deserved in the US.
