Impressive retrospective of Paolo Pellegrin

Dies Irae, the first large-scale retrospective exhibition of the frequently honoured Magnum photographer Paolo Pellegrin can still be seen until 9 September in the Noorderlicht Photogallery.

He takes us with him to the black spots on the map, and the black pages of our recent history: from Afghanistan to Sudan, from Tahir Square to Palestinian territory, from Katrina to the tsunami of 2004.

This is work marked by war, revolt and natural violence. But you should not expect pamphleteering. Pellegrin belongs to  a generation of socially engaged photographers who, despite their clear moral compass, refuse to preach and always keep the measure of mankind in mind.

The accompanying catalogue Dies Irae, published by Contrasto, can be purchased in the gallery.

The Sweet and Sour Story of Sugar

Noorderlicht on CNN

Noorderlicht has entered a collaboration with CNN Photo. For six weeks, each week on the photo blog of the American news broadcaster Noorderlicht and CNN will be showing the work of one of the six photographers who are participating in the project The Sweet and Sour Story of Sugar.

Last week the first dossier has gone on-line, with the superb photos Alejandro Chaskielberg made of dismantled sugar factories in Suriname and The Netherlands.

Globalization and sugar

The Sweet and Sour Story of Sugar is a long-term project of Noorderlicht which examines the issues in globalization on the basis of one product: sugar. Six internationally honoured photographers travelled the world for Noorderlicht in 2011 to record the sugar industry – or what is left of it – in The Netherlands, Suriname, Brazil and Indonesia.

The cultural institutions with which Noorderlicht is collaborating will be free to use the work resu lting from the commissions, and an archive of historical images. On the basis of the principle of parity, each institution will have the right to use that material to tell its own story about sugar. The Indonesian institution Ruangrupa kicks off the process in October/November 2012 in Jakarta, followed by the Langgeng Art Foundation in Jogjakarta. They will be followed by Surinamese and Brazilian organizations. In mid-December Noorderlicht will be showing its own version.

Noorderlicht saved!

Secretary of State promises subsidy

Noorderlicht is pleased to have received a letter from the Secretary of State for Culture, Halbe Zijlstra, this past week, in which he writes tha t he intends to grant €200,000 to Noorderlicht.

That means that for the coming four years Noorderlicht will remain in the basic infrastructure (BIS) budget of the national government, and is assured of a subsidy for that period. This avoids the threat of closure, but Noorderlicht is still faced with a budget gap of €300,000 per year. This will unavoidably have consequences for the programming and quality that Noorderlicht can offer. Nevertheless, we can now dare to be cautiously optimistic about the future of Noorderlicht.

We would like to thank everyone who has supported us the past months, your help has been effective!
