2010.01 (diptych) | 80 x 144 inches | Mixed Media on Canvas | 2010 Luc Leestemaker, 55, died in Los Angeles, May 18, 2012, after a battle with cancer. Born Hilversum, the Netherlands, May 18, 1957. Leestemaker worked as an arts administrator and entrepreneur in Amsterdam, then came to the United States in 1990 to pursue a more purely creative career. After a short stay in New York, he moved to Los Angeles and began painting. He was also active as a writer and lecturer, advocating an active public role for the artist that bridged studio and society and that acknowledged the artist's role as both self-interested businessperson and creative force for social evolution. He leaves behind his companion, filmmaker and designer Emily Lau.
