2012-2013
A New Season

Join us for the launch of our new season and the opening of our next exhibition, the U.S. premiere of Imperfect Health: The Medicalization of Architecture, on September 14 in Pittsburgh.

If you’re not in Pittsburgh, our exhibition Intimate Science is currently touring across the United States, with upcoming stops in Connecticut, Louisiana and Southern California.

Our Store, featuring unique and affordable gifts related to our current and past exhibitions, has been a success since we opened it three years ago. This summer we've been renovating, and we'll unveil a new Store at the September 14 reception.

We hope to see you soon, either here or elsewhere!

2011-2012
W
hat A Year!

The Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University had a strong season supporting the research, creation and presentation of innovative and challenging work.

We are proud to have co-organized the largest survey of contemporary artists connected to Pittsburgh through an unprecedented collaboration among the major local art institutions: The Carnegie Museum of Art, The Andy Warhol Museum, and Biennial founders Pittsburgh Filmmakers and Pittsburgh Center for the Arts.

The 2011 Pittsburgh Biennial was selected for the "Best of 2011" lists by the Post-Gazette, Tribune-Review, and City Paper. Our contribution to the Biennial, curated by gallery director Astria Suparak, included the premiere of four new installations and was described by Hyperallergic as "a visually and conceptually stunning exhibition that reinvigorates awareness of the problems that afflict the world today.” The Post-Gazette said it was "even more timely seen within the context of the Occupy Wall Street movement and its advocacy for cultural examination and social change."

We produced Intimate Science, a new exhibition curated by our Warhol Foundation Curatorial Research Fellow Andrea Grover, which looks at artist-initiated research in scientific and technological domains. The exhibition is now on a national tour and opening at Real Art Ways in Connecticut this fall. "Carnegie Mellon University's Miller Gallery has made a significant contribution to the relationship between art, science and technology with the exhibition Intimate Science and the related book New Art/Science Affinities," writes Hyperallergic.

New Art/Science Affinities is a new major publication that we co-produced with the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry. It includes interviews, diagrams, letters, meditations and manifestos on maker culture, hacking, distributed creativity, and technological and speculative design. It’s been endorsed by Bust Magazine and Bruce Sterling in Wired, and more than 1,000 copies have already been sold and downloaded.

We ended last season with the Carnegie Mellon MFA and Senior Art exhibitions, The You Inside of Me and Terms & Conditions, organized by the School of Art and featuring 50 artists. With these annual exhibitions, graduating students are provided with the valuable experience of participating in a professional gallery exhibition, while giving the community an opportunity to see work by some of the most exciting and promising new artists emerging from CMU.

Imperfect Health
The Medicalization of Architecture
Curated by Giovanna Borasi + Mirko Zardini
Organized by the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montréal
CCA

"Health is a focus of contemporary political debate in this moment of historically high anxiety, but are architects, urban designers and landscape architects seeking a new moral and political agenda within these concerns?" - G. Borasi + M. Zardini

The Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University is
proud to present the U.S. premiere of Imperfect Health. Through a wide range of materials including photographs, sculpture, video, research and archival materials, design projects, and architectural models and drawings, this groundbreaking exhibition uncovers some of the uncertainties and contradictions in the current ideas of health and considers how architecture acknowledges, incorporates and affects health issues.

A book extending the research is available as an e-book and in print in the gallery. An online TV channel and public programs including a lecture series, panel discussions, a flu shot clinic, screenings and tours accompany the exhibition.
